Cheap flights to Santorini (Thira) Airport

Santorini (Thira) Airport (JTR) is a small airport serving the gorgeous island of Santorini in Greece. With year-round flights to Athens and seasonal flights to most of Europe, Santorini (Thira) Airport is a convenient gateway to the idyllic Greek islands. As a popular destination for sun-seekers and budget airlines, finding cheap flights to Santorini is surprisingly easy so long as you know when to search for them. You can use Skyscanner's monthly search feature to help you narrow down the cheapest time to fly.

Best time to book a flight to Santorini (Thira)

Almost all flights to Santorini are seasonal, so you are largely limited to flying there between April and October. Ideally, you should aim to get to Santorini in spring or fall. That way the temperatures are still comfortable, prices are reasonable, and you can beat the crowds of the high season. Only two airlines (Aegean and Ryanair, both from Athens) fly to Santorini during the winter months. While you may be able to get a good bargain on your flight then, keep in mind that temperatures at this time of the year can be uncomfortable. If you are flying during the high season, sign up for Price Alerts as early as possible so you can grab the best airfare when it comes along.

What to expect when arriving at the airport

The airport is just 6 km from Fira, the capital of Santorini. There is a public bus that departs from outside the airport and will take you to the main bus station in Fira, from where you can catch a connecting bus to other parts of the island. Keep in mind that the schedule for the bus varies quite a bit and times between departures can be up to a few hours. A better choice is to take a taxi, which will get you to Fira in about five minutes. Negotiate a price beforehand. The hotel may also offer a shuttle service, which is more convenient but tends to be more expensive than a taxi. There are three car rental agencies in the arrival hall, which offer a good alternative to buses and taxis, especially if you want to see parts of Santorini that are off the beaten path.

Airport facilities

Santorini (Thira) Airport is a very small airport that is capable of serving just six airplanes at a time. As a result, the facilities here are a bit limited. Nonetheless, you will be able to find an ATM, cafe, duty-free shop, and jewellery shop. Since this is such a small airport, it is not open 24 hours and you may have to wait outside before the doors open in order to check in. The airport has also developed a reputation for having rather slow service and check-in times, which makes it a good idea to arrive a few hours before your flight leaves.
