Discover Alexandria
Few cities in the world can claim as illustrious a history as Alexandria does. Founded by Alexander the Great, Alexandria was the last capital of Pharaonic Egypt and is today a major metropolis in the Nile Delta. While the wonders that made Alexandria famous in the ancient world, such as the Great Lighthouse and its legendary library, have since crumbled beneath the waves, the modern city still exudes a certain romance thanks to it being Egypt's largest port city. Best Time to Book a Flight to Alexandria
Alexandria has long, hot, and humid summers. This time of the year also tends to be the busiest tourist-wise thanks to the many Egyptians who head to the coast to get away from the even worse heat of Cairo. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit. It is during those seasons that deals on hotels and flights are easy to come by and when the weather is much more pleasant. Travellers are often surprised to learn that Alexandria does get quite cold during the winter months, with temperatures often in the low teens and rainy days the norm. To find the cheapest time to fly to Alexandria, take advantage of Skyscanner's Whole Month search tool.
Airlines that Fly to Alexandria
While there are plans to open a second airport, currently Alexandria is served only by the Borg El Arab Airport. Most flights to Alexandria arrive from the Middle East, although there is also direct service to Athens and Istanbul. The following major airlines currently fly to Alexandria:
- Aegean Airlines
- Air Arabia
- Air Cairo
- EgyptAir
- flydubai
- FlyEgypt
- Flynas
- Jazeera Airways
- Libyan Airlines
- Nile Air
- Saudia
- Turkish Airlines
What to Expect at the Airport
The Borg El Arab Airport is a new airport featuring a modern passenger terminal in the shape of a boat. While the airport itself is clean and easy to navigate, transportation options for getting to the city are limited, which is a problem since the airport is located more than 40 km southwest of Alexandria. Chances are you will have to take a taxi to reach the city. Try to reserve an official taxi beforehand or have your hotel arrange to pick you up. There is also a taxi stand outside of the arrivals hall, but you will need to negotiate a price beforehand. If you are comfortable with Egyptian road and traffic conditions then renting a car may also be a worthwhile idea.
