Convenient and safe location
Stayed in a Large King Room near the Lift Lobby on the same floor as the Laundrette. There was a bit of humid laundry smell there.
Nevertheless, the room was spacious, though a bit awkward if shared by friends who are not very close, as the shower and toilet are separate, and the sink area is open space right in front of the bed. The room also comes with a small dining table and two chairs, convenient if you want to bring food from outside and eat in the room.
When requesting for an additional luggage rack, we were told to place it below the bathrobe on the clothing rack, but it seems a bit unrealistic as the luggage would potentially be touching the clean clothes hanging on the rack.
Hotel buffet breakfast is recommended, with a selection of DIY taiwanese street food that helps guests learn about the ingredients and how to put it together. Particularly loved the Gua-Bao, as the braised pork is very very good. Also enjoyed making my own savory soy bean milk. The chef making the sticky rice was also very accommodating in personalising my preference.
Would definitely stay here again!

Good Local Branded Hotel in Prime Location – Excellent Stay
We first landed in Kaohsiung. We took the highspeed rail (HSR) from Kaohsiung to Taipei. It was just one station from Taipei Main Station, which is the MRT at the Taipei HSR, to Ximen Station. You need to come out of Exit 6 of Ximen station. First time getting to the hotel from Exit 6 of Ximen Station we used the google map to find our way to the hotel. It took about 7 minutes to get to the hotel. Since the Ximen MRT is not that far away from the hotel we were able to take it to explore different places in Taipei. Hotel is also walking distance to National Taiwan Museum and Dihua Old Street.
Since there are no signs of which road you are walking once you come out of Exit 6 for precise directions you can follow this: Once you get out of Exit 6 of Ximen station to your right there is Adidas shop and to your left there is H&M shop. You take the road in between Adidas and H&M shop and continue to walk straight towards the Swatch shop. From the Swatch shop you take the road on the right to the Swatch shop. You will then walk pass Lush shop, Jun Plaza, Uniqlo, 7 Eleven, Starbucks Coffee, Ximen Mobile Police Station, Visitor Center and Comebuy. Then you will approach Watsons to your right and Ximen Best Souvenir Shop to the left. Then you turn left to where the Ximen Best Souvenir Shop is. Next to Ximen Best Souvenir Shop is IBMAN and ABC Mart. Opposite Ximen Best Souvenir Shop is Rainbow Hotel. After that you walk straight down and pass Cross shop, Don Don Donki, Converse and Tang Shop Souvenir. You cross the road towards TGI Fridays. You continue walking and you will see Crocs. amba Hotel Ximending is just opposite Crocs and next to World Gym. Please note that as time goes by the shops may change.
amba Taipei Ximending is located in the heart of Ximending, which has extensive number of restaurants and shops (shops that sell clothes, bags, shoes, souvenir, accessories, jewelry, phone cases, etc.). There are even shows happening in the middle of the street at night. Its similar atmosphere to being in a hotel in the center of Myung Dong in South Korea. It’s relatively safe to walk around at night.
amba Taipei Ximending is located above Eslite. The 1st to 4th floor is the Eslite. This Eslite shop doesn’t sell books. It has a big Starbucks on the 1st floor and Toys R Us on 2nd floor. While the floors are full of women’s wear, men’s wear, etc. While the 5th floor to 10th floor is amba Taipei Ximending. The reception is on the 5th floor together with the Butter Milk restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and the Tingba Lounge. Both the Butter Milk restaurant and Timba Lounge closes at 9:30 pm. You can have a drink at Timba Louge. There is some nice music coming out at Timba Lounge. On the 1st floor there is also another Butter Milk restaurant, which is casual dining. The Butter Milk restaurant on the 1st floor serves four different types of hot dog, sides (Nachos and House Frites Romano), sweet thangs (cake and pie), soft-serve (ice creams), its speciality buttermilk boneless fried chicken and drinks (beer, coffee, tea, juice, soft drinks, etc.). The laundry area is on the 6th floor and has 6 big laundry machines. Laundry is free for the guests of the hotel.
Reception of amba Taipei Ximending is on the 5th floor. If you want to go to your room using the elevator you need to click your room card on the sensor, which is located on the left of the elevator and then press the floor your room is in. There is security on the ground floor to make sure that you are a guest of the hotel. There are three elevators that can take you to the reception and the rooms of the hotel. The structure of the hotel seems as if it used to be a warehouse but changed to a hotel. The corridors of the hotel are very clean well maintained.
Once we arrived at the hotel at around 2:50 pm we took the lift to the fifth floor, which is where the reception is. I was professionally checked in by a staff named Joe of the front desk. They take TWD 3,000 as pre authorization, which would be cancelled when we check out. I was informed that it takes 2 to 3 weeks for the pre authorization to be cancelled. Once we checked in our two big luggage was kindly carried by another front desk staff named Eva to our room. Upon entering our room we were given two complimentary slippers by Eva. Eva kindly told us that we can take them home. On our way to the room on the 10th floor there is an area where you can get ice and also a water dispenser to refill the water.
When we arrived at our room, which was a Large Room located on the 10th floor we were able to have a good view of the city of Taipei. The room was clean. When I opened the door to my room on the right center I could see the bathroom sink in the middle the toilet to the left of the bathroom sink and the shower area to the right of the bathroom sink. It also has an electronic safe in the bottom right of the bathroom sink together with the towels. On the bottom left of the bathroom sink is the refrigerator, which has two complimentary water bottles. On the left hand side of the entrance is a big cupboard where you can hang your clothes and also put one large luggage on it. I put the other large luggage next to the cupboard. There were two bathrobes hanging on the cupboard. I have read comments on Trip Advisor that some people may not like the layout of the toilet, shower area and bathroom sink. But to me it was fine and the design seemed quite modern and innovative.
If you walk a bit further into the room you will see a massive King Bed. This King Bed is the combination of two queen beds and can sleep comfortably 3 people. The King Bed is very comfortable. The hotel has international sockets either side of the bed and also next to the table with two chairs, separate chair and on the walls of the bathroom sink. The air condition temperature in the room was good and is controllable. Wifi worked well. I was grateful that they posted ‘’Happy Anniversary’’ above our bed. On the table there were some snacks and two bottles of local sparkling water. There are curtains which you can use to divide the bed area to the cupboard and the bathroom area.
Things that may need improvement was that the room was not that bright in the bathroom and the cupboard area. There were only two lights in the bathroom and cupboard area which is located above the bathroom sink. It would be good to have one more light on the top to make that area brighter. Also, the water coming out from the bathroom sink was not that strong. The room is quite quiet and soundproof from the noises outside of the hotel. But you could hear the loud children noise from outside the door as they walked pass my room.
If you go to the hotel website and click on room categories. It will show the size of the rooms. Please kindly note that the size of the rooms are average sizes. This means due to the different layout of the rooms some rooms may be larger and some rooms may be smaller than the average sizes shown in the room categories.
Special thanks here goes to Ms. Carol Lin who managed my reservation and met all my requests. As she knows the hotel inside out we appreciated the room provided to us and the location of the room as well.
I went to the front desk to get additional towels for our room. After explaining why I needed extra towels to both Eddie and Adam of the front desk they understood. Then the extra towels were promptly provided by Adam of front desk. I was very touched when they cleaned the room during our stay the person who cleaned the room always provided us extra towels.
On the second day I went to the front desk to ask what time the night market opens in Taiwan. Adam was there again and he kindly told me that the night market in Taipei opens at 5 pm and closes at 12 am. Adam was kind by providing me a MRT map as well.
When I inquired about doing a local call I called the front desk and Eddie picked it up. Eddie was kind and told me that the local call made from room is charged while the local calls made from the reception is free. Therefore, I went to the reception and Eddie helped me make the local call. The next day I also need to make several local calls at the reception and both Andrew and Ji Sinn helped me make them.
Andrew handled my check out professionally. After check out we left our luggage at the reception as we toured Taipei. When we came back Joe was there. He was extremely nice to write down the name and address of our next destination in Taiwan in Chinese so that we can show it to the taxi driver.
All the staff at amba Taipei Ximending speaks fluent English. Everybody at amba Taipei Ximending made my stay wonderful and really cared for my needs. All of them have a friendly and great smile and represented the true hospitality of Taiwanese people.
We didn’t include breakfast because of the mixed reviews about breakfast on Trip Advisor. Also, as we are in Ximending there are plenty of places to eat. For those who haven’t included breakfast it is currently at a discount price of TWD 495 including taxes (Original price is TWD 550 including taxes). Breakfast at the hotel starts at 6:30 am to finishes at 10:00 am. On the second day we went to buy breakfast takeaway from the popular local Taiwanese restaurant in Yong He Soy Milk shop which is walking distance from the hotel. You can try to find it by using google map. As its popular you have to line up. For two people it only cost us TWD 291 for two sandwiches, one set of dumplings (about 8 pieces), one crackers, and two iced soy milk drinks. On the third day we went to buy Mac Donalds takeaway. It only cost us TWD 288 for two set meals. On our last day we wanted to try the hotel breakfast but it was already past 10:00 am and closed. So we went out to have it at Nomadland, which is near the hotel. It took 30 to 40 minutes for breakfast at Nomadland to come out. Therefore, I don’t recommend it.
As mentioned above there are plenty of places to eat nearby. Once you come out of the hotel. To your left there is TGI Friday on the 2nd floor and Mala Hot Pot restaurant on the 3rd floor. Once you cross the road there is The Pasta Bar, 7 Eleven and Korean BBQ restaurant. The Korean BBQ restaurant is on the 2nd floor of the same building as 7 Eleven. Next to Cross shop in the building where there is Don Don Donki there are 4 restaurants, which 3 of them are Korean restaurants (Kang Leung Hal Mae (강릉할매), Du Kee (두끼) and Jik Hwa Ku E (직화구이)). Near the Swatch shop on the way to the hotel there is Saizeriya (in Jun Plaza), Power of Meat (in Jun Plaza), Xin Kong Cha Restaurant (Next to Jun Plaza), Xin Kong Cha Restaurant (Next to Jun Plaza), Starbucks Coffee, Coco Curry House, Sushi Express, Yakiniku, Taiwan’s No. 1 Hot Pot, etc. You can also buy the popular Xing Fu Tang drink near the Swatch Shop area and opposite U.UR Living.
Once you come out of the hotel. To the right of the hotel you walk a short distance there is a pedestrian crossing. Once you cross the road to the left there is Mac Donalds, ABV Hot Pot Skewers Chuan Chuan Pi Giu Guan restaurant, Korean Style Chinese Food restaurant, T.K.K Fried Chicken. Before you cross the road on the left there is a Japanese ramen place. Once your cross the road to the right there is Nike shop. Behind the Nike shop is Watsons. But after you cross the road if you walk straight there are several bars (Wodyssey, Hotel B6 and Nomadland) you can go for a drink. Amazingly, this road has two cinemas. First one you will find is Lux Cinema. If you walk further down you will find in89 Cinemax, which has iMax. There is one more cinema called VIESHOW cinema next to Jun Plaza.
From my observation the guest composition of this hotel is truly international. 80% of guests I have seen are from South East Asia (Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc.), Hong Kong and Korea while 20% are from Japan, Europe, etc.
Due to the numerous restaurants and bars outside the hotel the occupancy of the hotel restaurant and lounge is not that high. When I see that a lot of customers come with their children. As a kind suggestion I think it would be good to change a part of the lounge area to children’s play area for different ages. One area for young children. While the other area for older children where there is a game station such as Xbox or Playstation area. I think parents who bring their children to the children play area will naturally buy drinks and snacks for their children if they are hungry or for themselves when they wait while the children play. If you only want to have an area for young children. Then you can put the Xbox and Playstation in the rooms that are Extra Large or bigger. In some of the hotels I have stayed in family rooms they have Xbox in the room.
If you are looking for a hotel close to MRT, central location in Ximending, don’t want to worry about food or shopping, want to come with family or couples and have staff at the hotel that caters to your needs and cares for you then this is the hotel to choose to stay in Taipei.
Overall an excellent stay. If we do come back to Taipei we would definitely consider coming back to stay at amba Taipei Ximending.
