The gray Mestre is the poor sister of Venice. It is very close to it on the mainland. It has more or less 200.000 inhabitants ( Venice has only 60.000) and if you are not obliged to go for any reason I suggest you could miss it at all. Somebody who is visiting Venice decides to sleep in Mestre, thinking it is cheapiest. However going to Venice, sleeping in Mestre, ruins the magic. There is a large industrial area.

This is where you arrive for Venice, whether you come by car, bus or train. Mestre is Venice's mailland anchor. (with a corresponding LACK of charm) Here yo get on the vaporetto that takes you down the Grand Canal to Venice proper. Although the postoffice/telephone office is now a bit out-of-date, it is still a place where people meet. If ou want to take a day trip to Trieste or the Tyrol, this is the place to start.

This is the town nearby Venice, 5 mins away by train or 15 by bus. Great for more inexpensive places to sleep over and avoid getting lost in Venice!
