Front-Row Seats to Puerta del Sol: Our Stay at Hotel Europa!

The shorter version
Overall a great stay in Madrid with outstanding views of Puerta del Sol. Our room was the biggest throughout our trip in Spain!
The longer version
** Arrival & First Impressions **
After landing in Madrid, our taxi dropped us in front of Hotel Thompson Madrid. Because the area surrounding Puerta del Sol is a pedestrian-only zone, we had to roll our luggage for about 100 meters down Calle de Tetuán and Calle del Carmen — an unpleasantly loud rumble over the street paving. We arrived early around 1:00 PM, and since our room wasn't ready yet, we stowed our bags with the reception desk.
** Dining at the Hotel **
We decided to have lunch at the hotel restaurant, which offered warm service and decent food. We ordered a Vermouth, a Sangria, a red Rioja wine, creamy chicken croquetas, huevos rotos, and a paella mixta, finishing with a coconut panna cotta. However, the clear winner and our first true highlight of the trip was the local Vermouth. Afterward, we headed out for a short stroll before returning to check in around 3:30 PM.
** Service & Language **
While we are just beginning to learn Spanish, the reception staff was able to converse in English, which made our stay much easier. Connecting with locals in their native language is wonderful, but we were grateful for the smooth communication here. Darlene handled our check-in, and Carlos kindly helped us bring our luggage up to the room.
** Room #430: Space & Views **
A unique feature of this hotel is that guests can virtually pre-select their rooms. We chose room #430, a quadruple room with four beds. It turned out to be the largest accommodation of our entire trip across Madrid, Málaga, and Barcelona. Best of all, it featured two balconies offering front-row views of Puerta del Sol, putting us literally right in the bustling center of Spain. We even got a free viewing of a street dance performance at 1 am in Puerta del Sol, right from our room's balcony :) The only turnoff in the room was one of the mirrors marred by black spots.
** Amenities & Maintenance **
To surprise my family, I had pre-ordered chocolate-coated strawberries to the room. Unfortunately, they were a bit sour. We were however pleasantly surprised with a couple of complimentary fruit baskets. Overall, the property is very well-maintained; our room, the hallways, and the stair carpets were quite clean. The ground-floor restaurant and its terrace stayed buzzing with guests throughout the day.
** Breakfast & Staying Hydrated **
Although the breakfast spread could improve, it shouldn't be compared to top-tier luxury hotels. On our first day, our room was stocked with four small, complimentary bottles of water, but this was a one-time perk. Buying water at the hotel later proved expensive at €15 for four small bottles. For the rest of the trip, we bought our water much more economically at nearby El Corte Inglés and Carrefour stores.
** Luggage & Airport Transit **
Traveling with three large suitcases, three carry-ons, and personal bags, we weren't sure if a standard airport taxi would have enough boot space. To play it safe, we booked a Uber Van for our arrival. However, we realized later that Madrid's regular sedan taxis have sufficient trunk space and are a much more economical choice. Upon checkout, we easily took a standard sedan taxi from the stand on Calle Alcalá.
** Nearby things to do
Quite a lot of the attractions are accessible with a short walk - Puerta del Sol is right in front, Plaza Mayor is a 10-mins walk and Mercado San Miguel is just next to it. The El Retiro Park is about a 20 mins brisk walk. Our dining choices were also quite close for short walks, less than 10 mins. Lots of shops around too!

Excellent hotel

Excellent hotel, very convenient location close to Puerta del Sol, with everything within reach, starting from the city's attractions, the metro, to the little places where you can eat or go shopping.
Once booked, you have the option to choose your room for a small supplement depending on its features.
In this regard, I would like to point out something very useful, especially for Italians: some rooms have a bidet, and in fact, with the option to choose, for only 10 euros I chose one that had it.
I was a bit scared by some reviews regarding the possibility of a taxi stopping in front of the hotel. Since the street is pedestrian-only, it doesn't drop you off right in front, but just a few meters away, so it's only a few steps and you've arrived anyway.
Last but not least, the staff is very kind, and the lemon water dispenser in the lobby available to guests is a really nice touch, especially after a whole day of walking!
If I were to return to Madrid, I would definitely choose this hotel again, and I recommend it to anyone who wants to take a trip to this wonderful city!

Everything you could want to enjoy Madrid

Can't say enough good things about this hotel. Location is fantastic for walking almost everywhere you will want to go as a tourist or metro stop is right outside hotel. Nice clean hotel with spacious, air conditioned rooms modernly furnished with balconies overlooking Puerta del Sol. Breakfast consistently good - eggs, bacon, sausage, fruit, baked goods and iberian specialties. Staff are extra friendly, speak English and will help with anything including delayed luggage.
