Cheap flights to Hungary

Hungary isn't exactly off the tourist radar, attracting millions of visitors a year, but nonetheless it remains something of a hidden gem in Central Europe, especially for North Americans. Hungary has more to offer visitors than even more popular countries in Europe and it remains a bargain compared to its neighbours. Its cities are home to some of the finest architecture and cultural sites in the world, while its natural wonders are among the best in Europe. Finding the cheapest month to fly to Hungary is easy when you use Skyscanner.

What to do in Hungary

The Hungarian capital of Budapest is the most visited part of the country and there is enough to occupy you here for at least a week. The banks of the Danube, filled with UNESCO World Heritage Sites, are a feast for architecture and history lovers, with the Parliament, Buda Castle, and Chain Bridge dominating the landscape. A boat cruise is an ideal way to see the splendours of this city. The Fisherman's Bastion offers views over the Danube and the city and is one of the most popular attractions in Budapest.

Outside of the capital, you can rent a car to check out some of Hungary's cultural sights, including the village of Holloko, the Pannonhalm Archabbey, the Christian Necropolis of Pecs, and the Tokaj wine region, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Natural sites include the caves of Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst, the Hortobagy National Park, and Lake Balaton. Thermal baths are also a must-do attraction and can be found throughout the country, although the most famous are the Szechenyi Baths in Budapest.

Best time to fly to Hungary

The high season in Hungary is July and August, when temperatures are at their best but hotels and flights tend to be booked up. That said, Hungary is noticeably cheaper than its Western European neighbours even in the summer, meaning that so long as you book in advance you should still be able to find hotel rooms that are affordable. Winter, from November to March, is wet, cold, and generally unpleasant, although you will also have no problem getting great discounts on hotels and attractions. The autumn shoulder season is probably the best time to visit: the foliage is beautiful, there are plenty of grape harvest festivals in the wine regions, and prices are still low.

Airports in Hungary

Budapest International Airport handles the vast majority of international flights to Hungary and the country is small enough that arriving in Budapest puts you within easy reach of wherever you want to go. As of spring 2017, the only direct flight from Canada to Hungary was a seasonal Air Canada Rouge flight operating out of Toronto and landing in Budapest. However, Vienna International Airport is located just three hours from Budapest and offers more options for flights to and from North America. In addition to Budapest, airports in Debrecan, Pecs, Balaton, Szeged, and Miskolc offer flights to destinations throughout Europe.
