About Kitchener Waterloo Airport

Currently known as the Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF), you can find this airport in the Toronto suburb of Woolwich, Ontario. This is a municipality that consists of amount ten smaller communities in the Waterloo Region, just northeast of the city of Waterloo. It first known as the Lexington Airport after the family that owned the farm on which it had been built, and this nickname still persists into the present day. Here's a quick synopsis of some of the facilities and services you can find in YKF.

  • Terminal Design. The airport consists of a single terminal with four gates, two baggage carosel and a central retail area. Two gates are for domestic departures, which make up most of the airport's traffic, another for international destinations, and finally one for domestic arrivals. International departures from here either head to southern holiday destinations or cities south of the border.
  • Airport Services. Basic amenities are available in this rather small airport. Bank machines and pay phones are in the main lobby. Vending machines and free WiFi are are available throughout the airport, and there is a cafe behind security for those that already have their boarding passes.
  • Border Clearance. YKF is part of the vast and busy Toronto airports system, and officially became an international airport when Northwest Airlines started to offer regular scheduled service to Detroit in 2004. Although this service is no longer offered, the airport continues to host international flights, and is considered to be a port of entry by Nav Canada and is staffed by Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).
  • Flight Schools. There are four flight training schools at YKF, and each focuses on a different kind of aircraft. Other than conventional propellor airplanes, you can also learn to fly small or medium sized helicopters at the province's only gyroplane school. The educational facilities here are connected ot the local college and the University of Waterloo.

Waterloo International is currently on the top twenty list of busy Canadian airports despite its relatively small size, especially compared to other nearby airports like Toronto and Detroit. Ongoing renovations and expansions are currently underway to accommodate the growing traffic. Currently there are no public transit options connected to the airport, so plan to take ground transportation to the nearest bus terminal or transit loop.

Airlines that Fly to Kitchener Waterloo Airport

There are only a few airlines with regular scheduled service at YKF, and one of those is strictly seasonal. The airport is populated by several flight schools and administrative offices for airlines, customs and retail companies, and Nav Canada.

  • Sunwing is here for the winter snowbirds, offering seasonal flights directly to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.
