Vietnam Airlines is the flag-carrying airline of Vietnam. Established in 1956, Vietnam Airlines has two main hubs in Hanoi (HAN) and Ho Chi Minh City (SGN). It also has a secondary hub in Da Nang International Airport (DAD). With its fleet of 82 Boeing and Airbus aircraft, Vietnam Airlines flies to 52 destinations in 17 countries throughout Oceania, Europe, Southeast Asia, and East Asia (not including codeshare agreements).

Vietnam has over 20 subsidiaries and affiliates, including Jetstar Pacific Airlines and Vietnam Air Service. It also has many codeshare agreements with airlines like Air France, China Airways, KLM, Delta, and more, with some flights from North America! Their most popular routes include Hanoi to Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City to Singapore.

Check In

Online check-in is available through Vietnam Airlines' website from 24-2 hours before your flight's departure. You can also check-in directly at the airport. Plan on arriving at least 90 minutes before all domestic flights, and at least 3 hours before any international flight to account for any delays you might have.

Baggage Allowances and Fees

Economy passengers are allowed to take one carry-on item for free, as long as it weighs no more than 7kg. Business passengers can take 2 bags instead, with a limit of 7kg for each. Checked baggage limits change depending on your flight:

  • Flights from Asia, not including Japan: 1 bag, 20kg for Economy, 30kg for Business
  • Flights from Japan: 1 bag, 30kg for Economy, 40kg for Business
  • Flights from Europe, Australia, and the Middle East: 1 bag, 40kg for Economy, 50kg for Business
  • Flights from the Americas: 2 bags, 23kg each regardless of class

Any excess baggage will be charged a fee of $2 USD/kg for domestic flights, or $20 USD/kg for flights from Europe, Australia, or the Middle East. Travelers flying from North, Central, or South America are charged $50 USD for bags weighing 23-32kg, or $150 USD for an extra bag.

Booking Fees

There are no booking fees with Vietnam Airlines, but regular transaction fees still apply.


Seating can be reserved ahead of time when you check in online. Otherwise, seats will be assigned to you. Passengers have 33" of legroom in Economy class, 36" in Business class, and a comfy 52"-59" in First Class seats.

Service on Board

Meals are served on all Vietnam Airlines flights. For long-haul flights from Europe and Australia, two meals are served. Flights between Vietnam and Japan/Korea are treated to local delicacies, but there are still other Asian or Western selections available. Flights to and from Malaysia only offer halal meals. There is in-flight entertainment available as well as charging stations at each seat.
