Canada is an incredible country to visit. From mountains to seas, our country offers adventure from coast to coast with lots of room for travellers looking for a dose of big-city life. Cities in Canada are bustling with music, restaurants, and art.
One thing though is that some of these big cities can be expensive, especially when it comes to accommodation. But with a little bit of planning and a few insider tips, visiting some of the best cities in Canada doesn’t have to break the bank. From Toronto to Montreal and Vancouver, it’s possible to experience all that these Canadian cities have to offer without it costing you big money. Let this travel list guide you through the best ways to see the top cities in Canada on a budget.
Toronto

As the largest city in Canada, Toronto has a lot going on. From festivals to shopping, you’ll never be bored in The 6. Known for its unique neighbourhoods, eclectic food, and dynamic film and music scene, you’ll find something to do any night of the week, any time of year. One drawback, though, is that travelling in Toronto can cost a pretty penny (well, a pretty loonie or toonie), especially if you’re staying in the downtown core.
To sightsee without spending a lot on transportation, be sure to take the Toronto streetcar. Easy to navigate and with multiple stops, the streetcar is a quick and fun way to see the city. Purchase a day pass for $13.50 to get the most bang for your buck.
Toronto also offers a ton of free activities, including free Wednesday night admission at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Wander the streets around Yonge-Dundas Square or Toronto City Hall, and you might even stumble upon a film set or an outdoor festival.
Do as the locals do and stop by St. Lawrence Market to sample some local cheeses, meats, and produce, and have a picnic in the park. Want some more tips? Check out this list of free things to do in Toronto.
Toronto hotels: budget and splurge
Save your travel budget for amazing experiences and book a stay at the Two Peas Variety, a great option for a Toronto budget hotel. Located along busy Spadina Avenue, this quaint hostel offers a hip common space and cozy rooms. The hostel is also super close to some of Toronto’s top attractions, like the famous Kensington Market, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and Nathan Phillips Square. Plus, you’ll be steps from Chinatown, where you can find some amazing cheap eats that’ll fit your travel budget.
If you’re looking to splurge on a hotel and budget elsewhere, the Fairmont Royal York offers a fantastic location with all the amenities that come with a 5-star hotel. Located in a historical building, this Toronto hotel is your ideal comfort option with lots of luxury.
Montreal

With beautiful buildings, amazing food, and a happening art scene, there is lots to do in Montreal. And on top of the diverse cultures and attractions, another bonus when it comes to travelling to Montreal is that it’s not quite as expensive as other major cities in Canada like Toronto and Vancouver.
Plan your visit to Montreal for the first Sunday of the month, when the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts offers free admission to permanent exhibitions. When it comes to local eats, there are so many places (and dishes) in Montreal that won’t stretch the wallet. Head to the renowned Gibeau Orange Julep on Decarie Boulevard, where for less than $20, you can get the classic Quebec meal: a hot dog and a mouth-watering poutine along with their highly-coveted creamy Orange Julep (the original!).
To get around the downtown area and some of Montreal’s top neighbourhoods on the cheap, it’s best to take the Metro (Montreal’s underground subway). Save money by getting a day pass for $10. Unlimited weekend passes (valid from Friday 4 p.m. until Monday 5 a.m.) currently go for $14.00. If you don’t feel like taking the subway, you can’t beat a long walk in Montreal during the warmer months.
Montreal hotels: budget and splurge
Looking for a where to stay in Montreal on a budget? For a quaint and budget-friendly experience, The Auberge Saintlo Montreal offers affordable accommodation close to downtown and the famous Centre Bell, where you can catch a hockey game or concert.
If you are looking for something fancy, check out Hotel Le Germain for a luxurious night’s sleep and compromise on what you spend for activities the next day to balance your Montreal trip budget.
Vancouver

Vancouver is a unique and beautiful Canadian city between the mountains and the ocean. Offering endless outdoor activities, you can be sure to find plenty to do on a trip to Vancouver without spending too much money. Focus on hiking and walking along the scenic seawall by Stanley Park to take in the best of Van City on a budget.
Using the Skytrain system is also one of the best ways to save a few bucks while experiencing all Vancouver has to offer. Check out the amazing ramen, sushi, and dim sum restaurants of Vancouver’s eclectic neighbourhoods where you can still hunt for cheap eats. To make the most of a sunny Vancouver afternoon, sample some craft beer from one of the hundreds of breweries and chill out at Kits Beach with a variety of fresh B.C. produce from the local farmers market.
Vancouver hotels: budget and splurge
For an affordable place to stay in Vancouver, The Samesun Hostel is very cost-friendly. Located in the heart of downtown, it’s great if you’re into the late-night scene. Be warned that the street in which it’s located, Granville, can get very loud at night, so bring earplugs or set your sights on something a little more your speed.
If you are looking for something more upscale, the EXchange Hotel Vancouver is located in the downtown core and offers access to amazing restaurants, shopping, and city views.
