A nice small historic town, was conquered to the Moors on the 12 th century, so you'll find a lot of moorish presence, at the castle especially!
The Moorish town of Silves is not far and is very interesting with its ancient castle. It is a small town on a hill and is literally surrounded by orange groves, the scent at certain times of the year is just lovely. You can go on a boat trip up the river from Portimao to Silves for lunch, highly recommended. Look for the turtles basking on the river bank. Plenty of restaurants and a market.
beautifull medieval town
Superb historic town with imposing castle and charming cobbles streets.
