One of my favorite cities in Turkey... the 3rd largest city, I was surprised I hadn't heard of it. It has some great waterfront areas to hang out. The "downtown"/ financial part has tons of coffee places where you can sit and enjoy a coffee and enjoy watching the ocean

Gayle and I actually didn't see much of Izmir (formally the Greek City of Smyrna), other than the City as we came in and left via our cruise ship or on the bus to and from Ephesus. Our nexus was the port and with probably a lot of lost opportunity to explore this interesting multi-cultural area more thoroughly.
