Whangarei, the northernmost city of New Zealand, was discovered by Captain James Cook in 1769. European settlers began arriving in the 1800s, making the city a popular agricultural zone. Today, Whangarei is known for its beautiful scenery and local commerce.
Nothing great to report, nothing poor to report. Its a very easy drive from here to Tutukaka for a few days of diving. There is more to do here, Tutukaka has almost nothing. The Whangarei falls is a beautiful falls, and well worth the hike. I'd recommend doing any hikes around it.

The playground down at "The Basin" is just fantastic for the kids to run around. The walk around the falls (on the north edge of town) is also a good way to stretch the legs.
