My favorite town in the South Island! Stayed here during winter. It rained a lot but at least its still warmer compared to the other towns in the S.I.

I had built Nelson up in my mind as some kind of idyllic, relaxed beach town long before I got there - which it's not. There's no beach at all and while there are some wonderful backpackers around, there is little to do in Nelson itself - everything decent is half an hour to an hour away. There are probably many great things about Nelson, but I never could forgive it for not being what I'd anticipated (though this is my own fault!) That said, there are some great easy walks along the river

Great place to visit in Northern South Island region. Close to Able Tasman Park. The region boasts great wineries with wonderful back roads.

I spent a few days in Nelson. It is a cute little town with a bit of an international backpacker scene for all the travelers making their way around the South Island. I stopped here primarily to check out the World of Wearable Art Museum.
