when in 1692, an Indian massacre occurred, destroying all but a handful of these pre-colonial buildings. Through strength and determination the town was rebuilt and prospered. The picturesque York River was a fluid expressway for merchant ships during the 1700s. Warehouses lined the riverbanks and as many as fifty multi-masted ships were anchored in the York River at one time. During this period John Hancock owned and operated a wharf and business on the York River behind the York Golf and Tennis Club. The wharf is still there today operated as a museum and art gallery by the Old York Historical Society.

One of the finest restaurants and pubs in our seacoast area! • The York Harbor Inn offers wonderful ocean view dining in a landmark historic inn. Our menu, featured in Food & Wine Magazine, emphasizes fresh native seafood, creatively prepared and artfully presented, as well as casual, contemporary cuisine. Menu highlights include our gourmet Flatbreads made with our own smoked sausage or fresh lobster meat, Seafood Ravioli, made with lobster, sea scallops, and gulf shrimp finished with a rich mornay sauce over spinach ricotta ravioli, our locally favorite Baked Stuffed Haddock, Corn and Lobster Chowder and our famous Seafood Chowder. We also offer the best in steaks and pasta dishes. Our ocean-view bar in the upper dining room has entertainment many nights of the week, as does our Ship’s Cellar Pub. Sunday Brunch is served year round.
