kingdom to this day. The palace is open to guided tours for properly dressed guests. Inside you'll find many shady courtyards connected by beautifully decorated covered walks. Of particular interest are the ornate reception halls as well as the large open air pendopos for listing to gamelan performances. You'll also find a small air-conditioned room where the desk at which the ninth sultan planned the overthrow of the Dutch is enshrined.

A palace of the Sultan Ngayogyakarta Haadiningrat. the palace is the main seat Sultan of Yogyakarta and his family. It serves as a cultural center for the Javanese people and contains a museum that displays the sultanate's artifacts.

There is only one real thing to be said about the Sultan of Yogyakarta’s royal palace complex at the center of the city, and heed this advice well: There are TWO gates, one charging 5,000IDR for entrance to a glorified diorama, and the other (near the big clock a little further on) charging 12,500IDR for entrance to the actual palace grounds. The first of these is utter rubbish, and a sneaky batik sales scheme to boot. Check your location and the price.

The Keraton is a palace of residence for the Sultan of Yogya and his family (a local sultanate in Java). Parts of it (minus the Sultan's living quarters) are open for public. It features collection of the Sultan and family, including chariots, furnitures, paintings, etc. You can also watch a performance of wayang kulit (shadow puppet) at a part of this palace. This Keraton is featured on the 19th season of the Amazing Race, as the pit stop for the 2nd leg (notorious for its first double elimination).

I should have appreciated this place better given its history and the fact that it is the palace of the Royal Family, but I felt it should have been maintained better. The government should have spent more money for restoration of the building and manage the flows of tourists to the place. It can get really crowded during school holiday.
