My last stay at the Westin Ebisu Garden Place was more than 10 years ago. At that time, it was one of the better options in Tokyo and was well worth the premium versus other properties in the city.

I stayed there again in November and very little has changed at the property in the last 10 years. The design of the lobby and rooms is the same. The service remains good and the overall experience is exceptional for a Westin.

The rooms feel a bit more like a very traditional Ritz Carlton (i.e., your grandmother / grandfather’s vision of luxury – lace, marble, and a bit of a French boudoir feel). The lobby is over the top marble and baroque statuary. Not my style but good quality and a very popular place for wedding photos. A noticeable improvement in the last 10 years is the upgrade to the lobby restaurant and buffet – which is underrated and a nice find.

The one thing that has changed in the last 10 years is that Tokyo now has far more luxury hotel options. A good rate at these properties (Mandarin, Peninsula, Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton) isn’t that much more than the 30,000 JPY+ rate often charged at the Westin.

Best things about the property:

- high quality rooms and service, much better than the “typical” Westin
- great location in Ebisu. Near Shibuya / Harajuku but a quieter area with great restaurant choices
- large rooms (much larger than the Cerulean Tower which is a close competitor in terms of price point and location)
- excellent in-house dining facilities

Opportunities for improvement:

- pricing level sometimes too close to the new 5-star luxury properties which makes the Westin a non-competitive choice
- disappointing spa treatments. Masseuses are a little too dainty for the job. Although the bathing facilities are nice, the treatment areas are uninspiring

Really love to have afternoon tea at "The lounge"! You can also enjoy tea and cocktails at "The bar" next to it.

So the interior design of The Westin is not really my style, but hey gold is a fancy color, and the decor does convey luxury and comfort. Also, I think Ebisu is more sophisticated than a lot of the areas where the up market hotels in Tokyo are located. It's a great place to go out at night (home of the standing bar, I've heard it said) and not as stressful as Shibuya or Shinjuku. There are bikes to borrow (BMW brand, how upscale) and the staff at the Westin are used to explaining the area and the restaurant and bar scene in Ebisu. The buffet in the 1st floor restaurant is half price from 8:30 to 10:00. So your doctor wouldn't recommend it, but I recommend not eating all day and then eating one obscenely large meal right before bed. When I was there it was Austrian themed--long time no see, all you can eat desert bar. The restaurants on the top floor are also nice and have little views of the area. If you forget your phone charger, there's a charging machine that takes coins. There's also a business center on the first floor with computers and a printer.

One of my favorite hotels in Japan. It is located in Ebisu, one of the best areas for shopping and dining in Tokyo (as opposed to Shinjuku, which is more of a business areas, particularly on the west side), and you will discover many cool shops and restaurants, strolling in the area. Or if you rent one of the BMW bikes the hotel has, you can cover a lot more ground and be able to see the interesting mix of residential and super fashionable sides of this urban area.
The hotel itself is very nice and its weekend end branch is definitely one of the best. If you are Starwood platinum it is included in your stay.

Palo Alto

one of my favorite hotels. the breakfast buffet is amazing, with a great selection of both asian and western cuisine. The rooms are really nice and I enjoy the ebisu neighborhood (not as touristy as places like Rappongi). I stay here most times I visit Tokyo.

The Westin Tokyo is located in a nice place, you can go to anywhere from here if you feel like it. This hotel isn't far away from anywhere off the Yamanote Line and there's a subway stop, too. You have to take a moving walkway, but it's less than ten minutes to the stations. Ebisu has lots of little restaurants and bars near the stations, so it's a fun place to go out at night. Lots of people speak English, although you might not know it at first. There are a lot fewer chains in the area than in other areas, although you can find chain restaurants here too, some with 190 yen beers and timed all you can drink offers.

Inside the hotel there is a grand, European style! Their western style rooms are beautiful, but if you want, the Westin also has Japanese style rooms, too. There are also five restaurants inside that are all well reviewed.

Slightly further out relative to a few other hotels. The metro is a good 10 min walk. They have a nice gym.

I love the food, the ambiance and the friendly crew.
