By the time summer rolls around, hotel rates drop as temperatures rise, especially in the southern part of the country where temperatures can exceed 100 (38). Winters in Iran are also extreme with very cold weather in the northeast and west, though visitors will see substantial discounts on hotel prices.

While Tehran is the capital and administrative centre of Iran - both current and historically - Shiraz is the hub of Persian culture and has been for more than 2000 years! Shiraz is also synonymous with poetry as the city is the birthplace of Persia's greatest poets - Sa'adi and Hafez. The best time to visit Shiraz is spring time when the numerous gardens and parks in the city are blooming with a variety of flowers and roses.

This historic city is very manageable next to Tehran -- walkable and there is comparatively little traffic. The main sites are all within walking distance of one another. Far from the capital, this isn't a religious center and the more relaxed and liberal vibe is immediately apparent just based upon how people are dressed.

Shiraz is the hometown of Hafeez, their most esteemed and venerated poet laureate. If Jim Morrison and Jesus Christ had had an Iranian love child, he'd be Hafeez. Just as followers of the Doors head to the Père Lachaise in Paris to pay homage to their Lizard King, so do the Persians at the Tomb of Hafeez in Shiraz. On entering there, you can get your fortune told by a canary that picks from a handful of Hafeez passages for less than a Toman.
