San Pedro de Atacama Vacations

This earth colored town is easy to like, and makes for an ideal base camp for adventures in the desert. With only a few thousand residents and more than twice as many visitors each month, you can feel San Pedro straining to define and hold onto its identity. Measures like banning all dancing and closing bars early have been imposed to keep the ... Read more
traditionally conservative town from turning into a raucous party scene. There are several 4- and 5-star hotels in town, and restaurants to match. Budget travelers will likely be unpleasantly surprised by the cost of hostels and food, but sticking to local restaurants on the periphery of town, or cooking at the hostel, can help keep costs down. Many of the nicer hotels offer tours to the spectacular scenery nearby, and there are at least a dozen tour agencies in town that will compete for your business. Some are better than others, so ask around or check reviews for the best.

This attractive oasis in the Atacama desert is a charming jumping-off point for outdoor adventures in the surrounding area.

If you're heading to the Atacama Desert, chances are it's been recommended that you stay here for its proximity to the country's largest salt flat and the volcano Licancábur. It's arguable whether tourism has gone too far in this charming adobe town - there's been a proliferation of more upscale places in recent years. Nevertheless, I'd happily go back again and again. Fly from Santiago to Temuco, from there it's just over 100kms drive to San Pedro,

Small town of San Pedro de Atacama is where the exploration starts. It has numerous accommodation and tour operators, and plenty of places to buy souvenirs. There are frequent transportation to Calama, Santiago, and to neighboring countries, including Salta, Argentina.

Very cool little desert town. With an array of little restaurants, and hostels to stay in. It has a hippie outpost vibe.

A beautiful place! Very well structured for tourism. Everyday is a beautiful day... And very dry also...

San Pedro de Atacama is a city in middle of the Atacama dessert and amazing landscape!

Can't say enough good things about my experience in Atacama. I would return in a heart beat. I stayed at Alto Atacama and the service was truly impeccable. Most of my excursions ended up being private, and while I was there, people who had booked shorter durations kept extending their stays. In general, people under estimate the amount of time needed to visit. You need time to acclimate, to get to the higher altitude. Enjoy horse back riding, cycling, trekking, star gazing and much more. My favorite properties in order of preference 1. Alto Atacama 2. Awasi --mainly because tours are guaranteed private. 3. Tierra Atacama 4.Explora, not so much the property, but the excursions and opportunity to do a "Travesia" to Bolivia is well worth the experience. Atacama is an excellent gateway to Bolivia, and in particular Uyuni. There is so much to be said about the experience...I combined Galapagos, Atacama and Bolivia on this trip and the diversity of what I saw was truly a phenomenal experience, one I highly recommend.

Mystical and peaceful place, with the mountain Licancabur over 6000 meters, the lake of flamingos, the third largest salt lake in the world and the Geiser Tatio, go

San Pedro de Atacama is a great jumping off point for exploring the deserts around. It is a small, sleepy desert town with a thriving Chilean hippy scene. A nice place to kick around for a few days.
