interesting little resort in an amazing location -- a sleepy peninsula across the street from the bay. While the standard room was pretty typical, theme aside, it did have an amazing balcony that opens up to the marina. It was both larger, and offered a more worthwhile view (of all the watercraft) than a typical hotel balcony. The theme is a little goofy, but they've put enough effort into it that at least doesn't feel stuffy or stale. They have a faux beach that ends just short of the water -- in a concrete embankment. There is a great walking path that goes on for miles around they bay. Don't come here expecting Endless Summer, while it is in a neat, picturesque spot, you'll need a car to experience the real beaches.

I'd come here just for the live music on the weekend. You can sit outside to enjoy the music and the ocean view. Food is relatively pricey but you pay for the ambience and the view. I really liked my salad with watermelon radish!

This resort is amazing! The lobby is gigantic and open, and they have a couple of couches and chairs next to the fireplace. They also have games like chess and Chinese checkers for guests to enjoy. There is also some big horse thing made of bark or something in the lobby that looks cool. There are also cabanas and fireplaces by the pool and the pool itself is heated which is nice. They even have a fitness center that is the size of a small gym, complete with spa treatments and a steam room!

This hotel is absolutely beautiful. First of all, the second I walked into the lobby, my first comment (and first thing I took in) was "IS THAT A WALL OF BOOKS?!" Sadly, the wall that backed the staircase up to the second floor was only covered in book wallpaper, so I wasn't transported to a Beauty & the Beast-esque library, but it's the thought (or facade) that counts. Sitting outside by the pool around the fire pits is a lovely way to spend the evening with friends, as is renting out the poolside cabanas (even in winter - the pool is delightfully heated!) When you're on Shelter Island, you're close enough to the city to get everything done in a day, but you definitely need a hotel that offers up enough amenities for you to relax in the off-hours. Kona Kai does just that. Their fitness center is enormous. Seriously, the biggest (and most complete) I've ever seen at a hotel - and if you grab one of the cards at the front desk, you'll get $20 off a spa treatment. The rooms are so perfectly island-like, it's amazing - and I think they're undergoing a renovation soon, so the older rooms that have been there since the 50s will be upgraded. Still charming in that vintage, almost kitschy way, but upgraded so their age doesn't detract from your immersive experience. Oh, and did I mention the giant shower heads that rain hot water down on you? Yeah. Sold.

Beautiful grounds, gorgeous views, restaurant is trendy and tasty but resort priced, nice pool and lawn in back, boats docked right next to resort. I came for a concert so not sure what rooms are like hence 4 stars instead of 5.
