I want to give this hotel a 4 star review but until they get rid of their tortuous "Garden Sleep System "self adjusting" beds, they just can't earn it. The mattresses are worn out and lumpy and super uncomfortable, and it's all because of these "set your own dial for firmness" mattresses. I hate them and they make every stay miserable. Please Hilton, toss 'em out already!

The hotel has been renovated and looks (and smells) new and clean. The rooms and common areas are nicely appointed. There's a tiny bar in the lobby and the staff seemed competent and polite (although they didn't welcome me back, recognize me as a Diamond member, or offer all of my Diamond amenities at check-in). There's a very nice pool and an onsite restaurant too.

Ah, the restaurant. We had vouchers for a free breakfast and thought we'd check it out. I opted to toss my voucher in the garbage rather than eat the slop they had on their breakfast buffet. Seriously, it was almost an insult. There were only a few choices and what they had looked disgusting (and I am NOT a picky eater); think the cheapest of the cheap pastries, fruit, and cereal. The bacon was fatty and undercooked, the eggs stale and nasty looking. They ought to be ashamed to serve food that looked like this.

Parking is out front and shares the lot with the office building. You have to get paper passes to get out during the workday. It's also an uncovered walk from your car to the front entrance, not pleasant in bad weather.

The Hilton Garden Inn in Midtown Phoenix has one silly problem: It's not the same Hilton Garden Inn as the one downtown. The downtown location occupies one of the most beautiful and venerated buildings in the city. The Midtown location looks like almost any other hotel, and the rooms are utterly uninspired. If you saw the colorless window dressings and eye-piercing carpet, you might not believe this place is a Hilton. (It's doubly shocking that this place was just remodeled a couple of years ago). That said, there's a bar and a good-sized pool, and the hotel is surrounded by the glories of Midtown. The rooms are comfortable enough, and even if the hotel is underwhelming overall, I love the surrounding neighborhood so much that I could sleep in a cardboard box and feel happy. Most Hiltongoers will be driving cars, but if you feel so inclined, the light rail is a luxurious way to get around, and it's right across the street.

You can't go wrong with a Hilton garden inn. These are almost always nice. The tricky thing about this one is that it's hard to find. It's randomly located in an office park. You'll have to park in a lot across the street. The hotel isn't really around too much. You'd have to drive or take a car to go out to eat. But the rooms themselves are nice. I really liked the big comfy bed and the pool here. Some rooms have balconies too. It seemed like a really quiet and comfortable option. Perfect for a business traveler.

One thing that I've learned from years of traveling is that you can always depend on a Hilton Garden Inn. Every Hilton Garden Inn I've ever stayed at or visited has always been pretty nice, aimed at the jetsetting business crowd (and families). I visited this Hilton Garden Inn in midtown Phoenix, and it only confirmed my high expectations. In fact, this Hilton Garden Inn is different from others that I've seen because it's bigger and has more amenities, including a 24-hour pantry for those midnight hunger pangs, a cool swimming pool with lots of palm trees and lounging spaces, and a neat high-rise design with views of the pool and courtyard. A staff member told me that while the hotel does cater to a lot of business travelers, it hosts a lot of families as well. They have cribs and high chairs if you need them. I like the location, too. Even though you are right off Central Avenue, the hotel is tucked away behind a couple of buildings, making this a quiet spot that also happens to be convenient.

First to Review

When I visited the Hilton Garden Inn, it was undergoing renovations, and there were large black curtains covering up areas of the lobby with exposed concrete. (A teddy bear in a hard hat asked me to “bear” with the construction, so I can’t really complain. That’s just good comedy.) The rooms themselves had been partially updated with modern HD televisions and dressers, but looked a little mismatched with the existing decorations. Sort of a cool feature: the beds come with a self-adjusting “Garden Sleep System,” (think Sleep Number, without the copyright) so you can adjust them to your liking. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, and told me a little bit about the building’s 50-year history. The Hilton shares a lobby with the adjoining high-rise, and guests are free to use its 35,000 square foot full-sized gym, which is a nice change from the standard 3-machine “fitness center” of other hotels.
