When you first approach the building you think: Is it a college campus? Old dorms? A massive old hostel? Former hospital? What? Turns out it used to be a seminary, built in 1895. Now the expansive property hosts a mainly young crowd of out-of-towners and folks who want nothing but a few steps between them and the city’s long stretch of urban oasis, the High Line. There’s an entrance just across the street. The hotel offers free bike rentals—love the red color and basket! There’s also a beautiful front courtyard with water feature and the hotel’s vintage 1963 Citroën H-Van, which serves as a coffee bar. Rooms are spacious, yet cozy. The staff is super attentive and especially helpful when it comes to dealing with guests with dogs. They go out of their way to suggest dog walkers and dog parks.

The High Line Hotel felt much more like a csfe or bar than a hotel. There wasn't any sign for reception, although there was a lot of staff walking around welcoming everyone. In the 'lobby' there was a fashionable cafe bar and seating, with two outdoor courtyards with addditional seating. It's a great place to relax and hangout on a sunny day. The hotel part of the place was odd. The rooms were standard and minimalisitc, but comfortable enough. The area in which the hotel is located, however, is perfect for anyone looking for exciting nightlife. Overall, it seemed like a better place to hangout and grab some coffee rather than for accomodation.

Did you ever expect that you could stay in the place where "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" was written? This hotel was also formerly a seminary, and has a beautiful courtyard space to boot.

Upon entering the hotel, I couldn't figure out where reception was. I had to ask the Intelligentsia coffee barista. That question was probably par-for-the-course, because the check-in clerk was standing to the right of the coffee shop.

Eventually, one of the hotel employees approached me and took me to the room. It looked rather artsy and minimalist, and I was told that there was also no room service. I didn't feel terribly welcome in the hotel; it was as if staff were putting on airs.

In any event, I did appreciate that it is close to the High Line elevated park, and if I was hankering for large crowds in an even smaller space than Manhattan, the Chelsea Market isn't far either.

I've been wanting to visit The High Line Hotel ever since its recent renovations, but frankly I was disappointed at what I saw. The Intelligentsia Coffee bar inside the lobby is a cool concept, but nothing to sweep me off my feet. The design is ok, but not so appealing as I would have expected. The worst was the outdoor restaurant which has a limited food menu, and serves $4 oysters said to be excellent. Instead, they came not chilled and were at best average. I didn't even touch the wine, at a hefty $22 a glass. Nice crowd and location, but that's about it.
