One of several examples in Old Montreal of the Beaux Arts style, this is a real glittering gem at night on a street (McGill) that’s already attractive for its architecture. When I visited, I felt like I was walking into a night club—a deliberate strategy on the design people? I think so. I was met by a very stylishly dressed concierge, in a pin-stripe suit, with shaved head and top-knot. The designer of the hotel, he informed me, fashioned each room with a different theme/décor. I exited the elevator into a dimmed hallway on one of the upper floors, and there was a red glow above each door—again, evoking the atmosphere of a night club. The room I was show was a “basic” Superior Queen, which had antique furniture and quite an elegant décor. Full marks here for style and impeccable service.

Hotel St Paul is an elegant, sophisticated and finely designed hotel. Each of the suite style rooms are uniquely furnished, and many have beautiful views of the St. Lawrence River or Old Montreal streets complete with cobblestone and horse drawn carriages. Hotel St Paul is located in Montreal's Old Port district, which is a popular tourist destination. This is a luxury hotel and therefore the prices are rather steep. But if you are looking for luxury and the experience of European architecture and cuisine while still in North America then this hotel may be an option for you. There is a wide terrace on the first floor where one can dine. The entire eating area is outdoors and the old rough hewn rock walls that border the dining area are covered in ivy and flowering vines. You will not be let down if you are seeking a lush and luxurious accommodation.

Well-appointed and stylish boutique hotel with a great location in Old Montreal. The rooms are comfortable, the staff are friendly, and the price point is good value by US standards. Allows dogs. The gym is modest but adequate. The dark night club-ish hallways are a bit tired but the rooms and public spaces are nicely done.

Funky modern boutique hotel. The rooms are plush and the second floor lounge is great.

Montreal

Angel by Massive Attack should always be playing the first time you walk into this hotel. The artistic European feel fits right into the scene of Montreal’s old port, providing a chic and modern vibe; it sounds weird but somehow they were able to mix an early century retro vibe with a modern allure, something to do with the buildings early 20th century architecture and the contrasted modern interior. The hotel doesn’t offer much in terms of facilities, a small workout area and meeting rooms (unfortunately the restaurant was being renovated when I visited). The rooms look more like an Aspen ski resort, with leather, wood and animal skin (though likely faux) throws on the bed and couch that immediately makes you want your next date to end here with a good bottle of cognac and that Massive Attack CD. C’est hot. If you’re planning a romantic getaway to Montreal, definitely check this place out.

This hotel is beautifully set in Old Montreal and the rooms are certainly clean and nice but like many boutique hotels, it believes good atmosphere consists of lounge music and dim mood lighting. If you are into that sort of thing then this is a great hotel for you. I generally prefer hotels which are homier and more personable.
