This is a beautiful hotel in Melbourne. Great location on Collins and minutes from the bridge to Southbank Melbourne. Impressive architecture and design.

A really beautiful building and I loved the room I stayed in, comfortable and had everything I could want or need.

Having ventured into many a 5-star hotel (if for no other reason than to use the bathroom), I was still struck by that little something special that is immediately discernable in the lobby of the Intercontinental Rialto. The converted space was once two separate buildings and so is now something of an architectural marvel with exposed brick and a skylight running the length of the building. Once upstairs, that sense of “otherness” continues with elegantly appointed guestrooms and outdoor balconies adjoining suites. Best of all, a small garden contains fresh herbs that are used by the cooks in the hotel’s restaurant and there is even a hive where bees are busy producing honey that can be bought in the downstairs market. A few downsides include a charge for Wi-Fi, fairly small bathrooms and a location that is slightly less central than other CBD hotels.

No hotel I’ve ever been to compares to the Intercontinental on Melbourne’s Collins Street, but not because of its friendly staff or even its astonishing rooftop herb garden, which even has its own beehive so that the honey at breakfast is extra fresh. What is striking at the Intercontinental from the moment you enter it is the building’s architecture and decor that, as a 200 year old heritage-listed bulding, is reminiscent of a Victorian-era train station. While it was refurbished in 2010, the building retains its gorgeous red brick and curving struts that charm from check-in to check-out. Even the 20 metre heated pool is surrounded by wood panneling rather than tile to enhance the classic, retro-but-not-in-a-cheesy-way feel of the place.

The hotel’s ownership changed hands somewhat recently and the Intercontinental has begun focusing on events and social interaction, with events like fashion shows and wine tastings occurring on a more regular basis, which gives the hotel another intriguing aspect to enjoy for the well-planned visit.

It should be said that the bathrooms are not huge and the wi-fi is charged somewhat unnecessarily for a five star hotel, but the rooms themselves are modern and equipped with a wonderful workstation. When a lot of hotels start to look the same, the Intercontinental is well worth the change.

More like 4.5 stars. My fav place to stay in Melb but truth be told the Langham is ultra posh and the Westin is better located. This is an amazing combination of historic building with contemporary urban touches. The rooms are very well appointed with integrated a/v, lighting and blinds. Staff are friendly and efficient without being cloying. Great concierge team. Skip the expensive hotel breakfast and do yourself a big favor by heading to the Hardware Société for a true Melbourne laneway perk up.
