This small quaint sushi spot was difficult to navigate into. Depending on which direction you are coming from, a hairpin turn is necessary to get into the one way street that serves just as parking spaces in front of the businesses on this street. The restaurant is cramped. We had 3 in our party and were seated at a table for 2. The whole experience was uncomfortable. There are note papers taped to all the electrical outlets that read "we do not provide cell phone charging." It's a bit offensive, since the outlet is there anyway. How much money are they losing in electric bills because of people charging their phones?

Food, was mediocre at best. Nothing was spectacular, and particularly fresh. Nothing that was memorable enough for me to even review. The portion sizes were small and the prices were high. The whole experience was too uncomfortable to ever visit again.

Make reservation!
Place was incredibly packed on a Wednesday night ! Initially when i first walked in i went to the front table a chubbier young lady in black was kind of rude..and i was already processing in my head what i was going to write on yelp!

Than we were greeted by a sweet Japanese lady in a chefs outfit, she sat as down quickly and once again the lady in the black came back and our friend that was out of town never had Japanese food ( i know what a square j/k) asked how does a certain beer on their menu tasted like and the waitress respond was a major freak out- she responded "i've never had such a weird question before, i dont know how to answer that". Annoyed, i was starting to wonder why the high rating?

Than after awhile the Japanese lady with the chef outfit came back and with her cheerful attitude she quickly served us. She found out i was a vegetarian and came back to double check with me ( I love it when restaurant do this, it means they truly care) about certain product being used on the items i had order. I later asked for her name because i felt she was changing my initial frown upside down! Haru was her name and it turned out she is the wife of the restaurant owner, how cute is that!

My food came out first and she felt bad for my friends and brought us out some free edamames. She also found out that it was my friends birthday and she actually turned off the light when she brought out the cake we ordered and made everyone in the restaurant sing a long! This little gesture really made my friend feel special!
Her service alone made up for everything and now is an incredible fan of Haru the restaurant and Haru the person!!

We LOVE YOU Haru!!

While visiting LA, my friend and I were looking for a Japanese restaurant that wasn't too far of a walk and nearby the Grove. After a few findings, we came across this place. Took us a good 15 minute walk from the Grove and didn't expect this place to be quite popular. Thankfully, we skipped out on another restaurant we were considering because they had a good one hour wait just to sit at the bar area!

Sparse tables and small space with very little detailing of decor, we waited for 20 minutes before being seated. There was seating indoors and outdoors under a cabana with heated lamps in case it was too cold, especially during "cold days" in LA. There were a few customers who had to wait for a table but the staff were so friendly ensuring everyone that it won't take too long of a wait to be seated. Wow! Such great service so far and we haven't ordered anything yet!

After reading over the menu and asking for recommendations, we ordered the following:

Lava Stone- what a great combo! This dish blew me out of the door! The spicy tuna, avocado, crispy rice and the Japanese caviar....YES!! Japanese caviar....OMG! I wanted to order another but I refrained myself from doing so. This was the most memorable dish out of everything we've ordered.

San Vicente- Umm....Can I have more?! This was divine as well but I had more of a desire for the Lava Stone.

Ono Carpaccio- I can definitely tell that everything at the restaurant is FRESH! Quality came out delicious and precisely tastefully done!

White Fish Tempura Ankake Style- reminded me of a particular restaurant that served something like this. Well balanced with the crispy tempura batter and the light broth swimming around in the bowl. Not my proud favorite but it was good to eat!

Overall, service and atmosphere was really good! The waitress kept coming back to refill our cups of Japanese green tea. One of the chefs came out to greet us too and making sure we loved our meal. Quiet enough to sit down and have a nice long chat with a friend or two for dinner. If you're willing to drop some money for hands down quality food, I'd suggest to dine here. All the customers seemed to have enjoyed their meal as much as I did. If I were in the area again, I'll keep this place as one of my favorite spots in LA!!

Crab, spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, avocado and smelt egg wrapped in soy paper were good. Soft, fresh, and solid.

Reasonably priced mom n pop joint. Haru, the owner, is almost always there to serve with a smile. Great traditional sushi/sashimi + an abundance of new-fangled fancy rolls. Good for the health conscious too because they will make rolls with soy paper and brown rice upon request. Plenty of street parking around (metred until 8 pm) but be warned that it's easy to miss this spot on the first pass because of where it's located on San Vicente.
