assisted freed slaves in returning to the land of their forefathers where, the theory was, that they would have a better chance of success and equality. From this population of emancipated slaves, Liberia was born. Since that time, the country has survived military coups, the wrath of president and war criminal Charles Taylor, and decades of civil war. Things appear to be turning around for the country bordered by Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Côte d'Ivoire; in 2005, the country fairly elected Africa’s first female president and has been making great strides to stamp out corruption. Travel and tourism infrastructure is improving with the country’s new successes but it will still be some time before it is easily accessible.
