The Cathedral of Saint Sophia was built in 1037. It’s one of the most well-known monuments of the city and a symbol of the New Constantinople. It’s located in Bodgan Hmelninsky Square. In the center of this square is the sculpture representing the Ukrainian caudillo who led the liberation of Polish rule in the mid-17th century. The cathedral remains an outstanding architectural landmark.

One of the landmarks of Kiev and one of the most visited sites in the city, it is a beautiful church packed with 11th century mosaics and a whopping 13 domes. Its construction began in 1037 but the Baroque exterior dates back to the 18th century. When in Kiev, it is a must.

It was so, so cold the day I visited, and I guess my brain froze cause I missed the caves. But I was still awed by this incredible complex and the hushed, sacred atmosphere it managed to project despite being a huge attraction!

Saint Sophia Cathedral: One of the oldest and most majestic Churches in Eastern Europe, it dates back to the Kievskyi Rus era. It has beautiful and well-preserved Byzantine-style mosaics of Saints and Kings of those times. Close spiritual and political ties with Byzantine Empire and the Greek world are evident, as all inscriptions are in Greek.
Also the surrounding grounds of the church are interesting and serene.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, this complex of monastic buildings and golden onion domed spires overlooks downtown Kiev and the Dnipro River that runs through it. The labyrinth complex of caves underneath the cathedral compound evokes Eco Umberto's 'The Name of the Rose.'

The most amazing aspect of this monastic complex is the caves. Not for the faint of heart, especially if it is very crowded, but definitely a memorable experience. The caves are home to mummified monks and are also the site of religious pilgrimage. Passageways are dark and narrow and visitors must buy a candle at the entrance.
