As a wine connoisseur, I couldn't help but love the time I spent in the Hessen. I stayed in the unofficial wine capitol of the Rheinhessen, Rüdesheim am Rhein. The Rhine river is the birthplace of the now famous Riesling wine. Most people only know Riesling as being a sweet wine, but in the Hessen, you will find this versatile grape has many variations from very sweet to very dry. There are many wine cellars in the Hessen region where you can try all the different varieties of Riesling, from Eiswein (dessert wine) to trockenbeerenauslese (or trocken if you can't spit out the full pronunciation). If you have the time, I highly suggest going on a Rhine cruise, to see the miles of vineyards cascading down the steep banks of the Rhine, and the many robber baron castles that dot the landscape. Don't worry, the robber barons are long dead and will not demand a tax to cruise their portion of the river. The Hessen is truly a magical place for the wine and castle enthusiast.
