Durban‘s cosmopolitan vibe and miles of sandy beaches make it one of the most distinctive cities in South Africa. “Durbs”, as the locals call it, is a melting pot of cultures, reflected magnificently in its dining and art scenes. and architectural marvels. Festivals rank high among things to do in Durban, and the Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) and Awesome Africa Music Festival draw large international crowds. Meanwhile, the city hosts vibrant nightlife which attracts many weekend visitors from Johannesburg and Cape Town. The beaches and harbor offer both luxurious hotels and affordable attractions for ocean-lovers. Durban is also an important home base to more remote activities such as safaris and hiking trips.

Durban promenade is a great place to walk, despite the ugliness of the high rise hotels on the side. Durban Indian food is another of its strong selling points. Countless of beaches and nature reserve at his door steps makes it a really good urban base for nature lovers.

Too built up for my liking... but it's a personal thing.. also not very safe.

Local from Durban

Beautiful, within an hour or 2 u can be in a nature reserve or mountain. Of course it's a coastal city with beautiful beaches hugged by the warm Indian ocean.

With its fine beaches, great dining (yay bunny chow!), and colorful mixture of Zulu and Indian cultures, Durban is a place that too may people breeze past on their way up to Jo'burg. Walk the length of the beaches and enjoy the sun, shop in Victoria Market for crafts and spices, and eat your heart out -- Durban is more than worth a night or two of your time.

Although I visited Durban many years ago, I have heard via friends and family that it has not changed much over the past few years. New or should I rephrase relatively new marine world is said to be a sensation.

Durban is the 3rd largest city in South Africa BUT it has the largest Indian population outside of Asia. It is also a very busy container port city. Because of the Indian influence in Zulu land, the vibe in Durban is very unique and indeed interesting.

Live here! its my best - sun, sea, mountains, wildlife all within 2 hours drive

Brisbane, Australia

Very pretty town located on the Indian Ocean. I was here for a conference and didn't get an opportunity to do many touristy things, but what I saw was very nice. The beaches were very pretty, and the seafood was awesome.

Durban is a real kick in the pants, lots of exciting things to see and do.
The beach front is a great area to hang out and enjoy the sun, but beware of the local wildlife. Be extra careful when going zwimming.

Hillsdale, Michigan

think its a big harbour city next only to capetown. visited the sea world on the beach and thought of the helicopter ride but had to forego to go with friends to go play pool in the neighbourhood. it was still coming out of the aparthied era in the 1990's.
