Hostel Detroit is fighting the good fight. That said, it's a fight-in-progress, so come expecting "an experience" instead of "ease." If you're tired of the hackneyed tale of Detroit's decay, yet too pragmatic to ignore the real issues the city faces, this could be for you - as long as idealism outranks clean bathrooms and quiet slumber. Rooms are bright and cheery, and range from $25 (10-bed bunk) to $47 a night. There are several kitchens, cute reading nooks and a deck for sun basking and blight viewing. Extra homey touches: free laundry, free lockers with lock, free veggies from the gardens with notes signed "love, hostel detroit." Manager Michel (mee-shell) may cook everyone dinner or give tours. For an authentic experience, hostel guests are welcome to a Sunday night pot luck with the neighborhood. That said, the hostel is still fighting this fight, so don't expect a super-organized seamless system. They weren't accepting credit cards when I was there, so have some cash on hand, and reserve your bike ahead of time ($20 a day).

I've always been leery of hostels since my European backpacking experience, but I have to say that Hostel Detroit is a delightfully cheery hostel. It is located in North Corktown, directly next to vacant land and an urban garden. The overall look and feel of the hostel is quirky cool. The hostel offers private, semi private and shared rooms. The rooms are a no frills, place to lay your head. They have 4 private bathrooms, free Wi-Fi and laundry facilities. Several kitchens are available to stock up on food and cook your own meals. I would have liked a cleaner kitchen, but that may just depend on fellow travelers and their penchant for cleaning. The urban garden next door graciously opens its "door" for guests to pick some veggies. The hostel rents bikes for $10/day, which is highly recommended, as the hostel does not have many bars or restaurants in walking distance. However, its a short bike ride to all of the much talked about attractions in Corktown and downtown Detroit. For urban explorers on a budget this is a place worth checking out.
