          Arts, museums, and a famously gay-friendly society make Cologne a hotspot in Europe for both Europeans and international visitors. In particular, the Rhine River city brings culture-seeking mavens from all over the globe to dine on its hearty German food and drink its famous beer. Strategically well-placed along one of the more popular backpacking circuits in Europe, Cologne sees a heavy trade of foreign travelers on multi-city routes - and as such, it is more than ready to accommodate these budget-seeking nomads. But never fear, plenty of business-friendly hotels and charming family inns await, as well.

          Cologne Hotels
          Backpackers and students will hit the jackpot in Cologne: there are nearly 20 reputable youth hostels in service around the city. In particular, the aptly-named HOSTEL Köln is worth considering: set on a quiet street (but an easy walk from downtown), the price includes internet and a hearty German breakfast along with reportedly fantastic service. The Meininger City Hostel and Station Hostels are also great choices for good amenities and comparable prices, and the well-loved Weltempfänger Hostel features the rarity of charge ports next to each bed.

          You don’t have to be a student or a nomad to find a good place to stay in Cologne: luxury hotels like Im Wasserturm (which is housed in an old water tower), Pullman Cologne, and the Maritim Hotel offer posh stays with beautiful views, many amenities, and world-class service. And family-friendly and business-friendly lodging like the Radisson Blu, Domspitzen Hotel, and Star am Dom are all comfortable, centrally located, and easy on the wallet.

          Things to Do
          When in Cologne, do as the ….er, Colognians, do? Check out the imposing Gothic cathedral of Kolner Dom and the photogenic Hohenzollernbrücke Bridge, then be sure to spend some time shopping in Schildergasse and the Alter Market. Bring the family to the Cologne Zoo, have a picnic on the green at Rheinpark, or taste samples at the Chocolate Museum. And if the weather is bad, choose which of the other 30+ museums you want to get lost in: the Ludwig art museum and Roman-German Museum are both great options.

          Save time and energy for when the sun goes down, though: you’ll find yourself frolicking with the local youths at the bars and clubs, or at the gritty junkyard Odonien, an outdoor junkyard where word-of-mouth parties go on all summer.
