Christchurch Vacations

Established by stiff upper lipped English settlers and known as the Garden City for its abundance of trees, Christchurch is a friendly city situated at the edge of the Canterbury plains. In February of 2011, this hardy city on New Zealand's South Island was devastated by an earthquake. The recovery is in progress and bolstered by the historic ... Read more
strength of the inhabitants. The busy student youth culture and tourism industry are sure to assist in the rebuilding of the town. The top attractions in town are Cathedral Square, The Botanic Gardens, and Sumner Beach.

Christchurch is still in somewhat rebuilding mode, from past earthquake. Pleasant to walk around the center, saw Cathedral Square, Canterbury museum and central shopping area.

A challenging place to live if you are used to having a city to explore and weekend options, but lots of outdoorsy stuff nearby makes it popular. The city is slowly building itself back up and it will be interesting to see how it looks in years to come.

To be fair to Christchurch I have spent most of my time here working brutal hours on the rebuild so my ability to explore wholeheartedly has been rather compromised!

A lovely city with nice botanical gardens. The downtown is very walkable. I liked it a lot!

A little piece of England in New Zealand. Worth a visit. Check out the cathedral, the river, gardens and the south pole exploration museum.

Don't miss it...especially now after the earthquakes. Cheap places to stay, great food, great hiking. Enjoy!

A very nice city in which we stayed 2 days on arrival and then traveled the north half of the South Island and then back to Christchurch 3 weeks later for one last night before flying out. Every Sunday they have a Sunday market in the city park. Very clean and lots of entertainment and tables to eat lunch and grass areas for the kids to play. Not commercialized like ours in the USA.

It may be a lil shaky but that is just natural way of life here for the meantime.

Come and see the attractions here in New Zealand. You will love the natural organic things here for you to rest, cleanse, relax and go back to your countries refreshed or revived.

The people are friendly and the sun is wonderful during warm summer nights.

You will hear the New Zealand natural sounds able to rest easy. It is a good way to connect with the whanau here in New Zealand.

So it is the end of our holiday. We are sad to be going, we've had a great holiday in NZ.

But it seems Air NZ are not capable of booking us through to SI! So we might get an extra holiday in Australia?

We had a fortnight and wanted to do a self drive with a 3 year old child hence the first decision was to choose between the two islands. We chose the South island due to its beauty and the scenic drive opportunities we get. Some of the other considerations were:

Christchurch is the gateway to the gorgeous South Island. Go North for stunning beaches, wineries, boating and more. Go South for Hobits, skiing, bungee jumping and hiking that will take your breath away
