Once occupied by the Romans and the Normans, Cardiff Castle was extensively restored in 1780 by the 3rd Marquis of Bute who was reputed to be the wealthiest man in the world. The landscaped grounds known as Bute Park are also well worth a visit.

Though some parts are original, much of this castle has been really excellently restored to match the style of the time. I loved seeing the apartments, especially -- while the castle ruins across Wales are fascinating, it was great to actually get a better glimpse into what life would have looked like when these castles were occupied by the rich and powerful.

Really fun tour located in the heart of the city. You learn about the castle's history as both a medieval stronghold and as well as a bomb shelter during the Blitz in WWII.

Lovely scenery as well.

I am a bit of a fairy tale head so love all things castles - and Cardiff Castle is a great specimen of a castle in Britain that I simply loved visiting it.
The castle itself is largely intact, and the rooms that you can visit are exquisite. However it was the ability to scale the walls and walk on top to view the outside that I loved.
I found that the castles greatest attraction lies outsides the castle itself - did you notice the animal wall to the left of the castle towards the park? I loved discovering the animals on them - stone carved and so pretty! For this animal wall I'd name Cardiff Castle my favourite castle (for now)!

With a history that reaches back to Roman Britain, Cardiff castle has played an important role in Welsh history. Even acting as a bomb shelter during the second world war (take a look at its exterior; the walls were cut open to allow quick ingress and egress and later resealed). The audio tour is fantastic and takes you through the various redesigns and rebuilds of this stunning motte and bailey castle - from the top of which you will get an amazing view of cardiff and the surrounding countryside. The exquisite house, with its beautiful stained glass, is a sight to behold. Definitely worthwhile for anyone who enjoys history.

With masonry from Roman times, this is where Cardiff started. It has been remodeled & renovated several times from the medieval keep to the extensive upgrades done by the Marquess of Bute.

You can get tours inside, which does cost money, but I think you can just freely walk around the large grounds and go up the castle area at the back for great views of Cardiff.

Not the most beautiful castle in Europe but definitely the most beautiful in Cardiff! About 12 pound to get in, comes with an audio guide, and it is easy to spend a few hours exploring the grounds, keep and castle. You can also play dressup by the video viewing room which would be fun for children (or 3 20 something year olds)
