Cape Town is one of the most multicultural cities in the world, and a major destination for immigrants and expatriates to South Africa. The second largest city outside of Johannesburg, it is the seat of politics, economics, and industry in South Africa; in fact, it has been named one of the most entrepreneurial cities on the planet. With over 2 million international tourists each year, Cape Town is the most visited city in all of Africa; the “City Bowl” (the area cradled by towering Table Mountain, Lion’s Head, and Devil’s Peak) is the most frequented area, owing to its proximity to hikes and scenic lookouts, the harbour, and multicultural neighborhoods. Thus, the city is equipped with over 500 hotels ready to accommodate the weary traveler.
Hotels in Cape Town
Cape Town hotels are often best suited for business and well-off travelers, which comprise much of the tourism industry. As such, you needn’t look far to find a posh, luxurious accommodation or something to cater to your need for relaxation. The Mount Nelson Hotel, for example, is exquisite with rolling lawns, a grandiose facade, and a venue reminiscent of 1950s Hollywood. Cape Grace Hotel is a stunning boutique hotel on the waterfront, with unparalleled 5-star amenities and decor; while the Ellerman House (a member of Club 5c) is an opulent oceanfront 1906 mansion with 11 lavishly appointed guestrooms.
Of course, you don’t have to take out a second mortgage to sleep well in Cape Town. The Grand Daddy hotel on Long Street offers trendy lodging in the heart of the bars and nightclub scene. The Ashanti Lodge, popular with budget travelers and backpackers, offers communal and private lodging as well as an in-house travel agency that can book you everything from nearby hikes to Great White Shark dives.
Things To Do
For things to do in Cape Town, get out and see the gorgeous landscape and environment in which the city was established: a hike up Table Mountain is almost a necessity, and the views are absolutely spectacular. Nearby Lion’s Head and Devil’s Peak are Table Mountain’s comrades, and also make for great hiking and picnicking. Venture outside the city center for some of South Africa’s best wineries; the region of Constantia in the southern suburbs is famous for its grape production. Here, sleep at the Steenberg Hotel, a tranquil 5-star hotel with a golf course and patios overlooking the vineyards.
In the city, you can find plenty of shopping and dining along the waterfront promenade, and a thriving nightlife scene when the sun goes down. Hang your hat at Table Bay Hotel, smack dab in the middle of the action, or get in touch with the country’s roots at Dutch Manor, a historic hotel filled with nostalgic antique decor and four-poster beds in every room. Don’t miss the penguins on Boulders Beach; it gets crowded with tourists ogling the adorable black and white birds, but is a must-see while in Simon’s Town. Walk the stretch of Cape Point to the lighthouse at the end, and stand on the rocky peninsula of the Cape of Good Hope for a breathtaking experience, knowing you’re at the last inch of land before open waters and Antarctica. For a more sobering experience, ferry out to Robben Island, the castoff site for apartheid-era freedom fighters - most notably Nelson Mandela. Former prisoners are the tour guides on this historic exploration.
