Canela is a small town in southern Brazil. It is predominantly a tourist town, with visitors from far and wide attracted to the area’s natural beauty and the town’s atmosphere. Ecotourism is the most popular attraction, and activities, such as rock climbing, hiking and river rafting abound. Just outside the town sits Snail Falls Park (Parque do ... Read more
Caracol), a beautiful nature park named for the massive waterfall in its center. Within the town, the most popular destination is the Cathedral of Stone (Catedral de Perda), an immaculately carved behemoth. Because tourism is the town’s principle economic driver, many of its residents buy in to cultural events. Christmas is one such event, and the town comes alive with lights and other festivities. Many Brazilians travel to Canela for the Christmas season because it is one of the few places in Brazil where snow is likely to blanket the ground.

Weather

Though rain can fall at any time of the year in this region, Rio Grande do Sul sees the heaviest downpours during the winter months (June to September), which can be paired with a cold, southwesterly wind known ... Read more
as minuano. During the winter, Rio Grande do Sul’s higher elevations get snow, marking the beginning of peak tourist season in some areas; Gramado, for example, is Brazil’s Christmas capital, which attracts tourists from near and far and drives up hotel rates. Summers in Rio Grande do Sul are the opposite: in some areas, temperatures can rise to a sweltering 99 (37), though the coastal areas offer some respite.

Novo Hamburgo, Brazil

Beautiful landscapes, mountain trails, refreshing temperatures, luxurious hotels and the café colonial – a vast selection of cakes, jams, cheeses, meats, wine and other drinks produced by the region’s colonos.

Canela city has many attractions, the most creative theme parks and museums, through an extensive network of restaurants and shops. But what really gets people are the fantastic chocolate factories, but the better show that nature of its surroundings is indeed performed by Caracol waterfall and Ferradura Park.

Novo Hamburgo, Brazil

Canela has been spared the plastic makeover of its neighbour and offers more affordable sleeping and eating options. The painted wooden buildings provide a certain downtown charm. Canela is surrounded by good parks and is developing as a centre of adventure tourism, with rafting, abseiling and trekking on offer. There's a tourist office, www.canelaturismo.com.br.
