To rate the It's-It Ice Cream factory lower than 5 stars is borderline blasphemous to all that's holy in the foodie world. These delectable little chocolate dipped ice cream and oatmeal-graham cookie sandwiches are the stuff dreams are made of. I never heard of them before I moved out West and I pay about $3 each in my local supermarket here in Las Vegas (when I can find them). They usually only carry the original vanilla flavor so when I was visiting the San Francisco area recently and saw the sign, I spun my rental car right around!

Although this is the ice cream sandwich factory, there are sadly no factory tours. The real reason to stop here is the ice cream shop! They have every flavor of It's-It and flavors I didn't even know existed, from Cappuccino, Pumpkin, Strawberry, Green Tea and my new favorite, Mint Chip. You can buy 'em all, and the prices are cheaper per piece than at the grocery store. Score!

These little ice cream sandwiches are a legend of San Francisco where they were created in 1928. If you've never had one and you're in the area, go and give them a try. You will not be disappointed.

A fantastic local treat. Love experiencing the slow addition of new flavors. Can take years. Fondly remember when mint chip was introduced. Everyone has a factory tour, or at least a mock-factory tour. Why not It's It?

Finally got to visit the factory shop in Burlingame when the shop announced the release of their new green tea flavor and would be handing out free samples for the first 1,000 who came through the store that day. The staff was pleasant and it's awesome that you can buy It's It ice cream sandwiches in bulk. If you do, you can get them packed in a nice styrofoam cooler so you can transport them without them quickly melting. The shop had all of their flavors to choose from for ordering.

I've lived in the Bay Area all my life, but have never visited the store until this afternoon. Had to try out their new Green Tea flavor, the 7th addition to their current menu. They sell these awesome ice cream sandwiches at $1.50 a piece, or you can buy them in packs of 12 or 24. Totally worth the investment if you ask me. I was a bit unprepared this time, but I'll be back with a cooler to purchase more.

It's It!

This iconic ice cream sandwich has been part of my Bay Area experience since I moved here in 1984. And it hasn't mattered whether the flavor has been Vanilla, Chocolate, Mint, or Cappuccino. This dessert treat has seems to be harder to find these days, although one nearby convenience store stocks the complete selection.

The It's-It was invented by George Whitney at the old Playland at the Beach in San Francisco. For nearly forty five years, until Playland was demolished in 1972, the It's-It was available only at Whitney's shop. One parallel is the Nutty Bar which is only available in Arnold's Park Iowa.

After Playland closed, the It's-It name was passed to George Mavros, who continued to run the business at another location near Ocean Beach. In 1974, another group bought the It's-It name, building its current production facility in Burlingame in 1976.

There are many other ice cream novelties out there, but there's only one It's It. There's just something about that scoop of vanilla ice cream, sandwiched between two large old-fashioned oatmeal cookies, and then dipped the sandwich into dark chocolate that makes my taste buds smile.
