The Old Town part of Bucharest, also called Lipscani after the main street that crosses the area, is so much filled with bars, pubs and restaurants.
Known to most locals as Centru Vechi (the Old Centre), Bucharest's Old Town is defined by the area bordered by the Dambovita river to the south, Calea Victoriei to the west, Bulevardul Brătianu to the east and Regina Elisabeta to the north. The area is more or less all that’s left of pre-World War II Bucharest. What the war didn’t destroy (and it destroyed a fair bit: allied bombing was fierce during the early part of 1944) communism did, most notably in the form of the grandiose Civic Centre project that saw almost a fifth of the total area of the city flattened to make way for Bulevardul Unirii and Casa Poporului. Indeed, that anything survives at all is little short of a miracle.

It’s a thing to visit the old town part of a city. Bucharest has such an area, located in its centre. It was an area where you could have find many shops – jewelers, clothing, bookstores – and it was, a few years back, re-imagined and transformed. Nowadays you can see the old buildings – old houses from 17th century, for instance – and you’ll find many-many bars, coffee shops, and restaurants. There are also splendid bookstores and some souvenir shops. It’s not the most glamorous part of the city – but it is a nice stop if you want to drop by, get a drink and go further ;)

Great place to hangout at night, it's full with bars and restaurants. A lot of students, tourists and office people. Overall a nice place to be with friends after work.

Perhaps Bucharest's most charming district is to be found in the area called Lipscani, in the Old City Center. What used to be a merchant's street of mixed nationalities - Romanian, Austrian, Greek, Bulgarian, Serbian, Armenian and Jewish - soon became known as Lipscani, named for the many German traders from Lipsca or Leiptzig. Other streets took on the names of various old craft communities, such as Blanari (furriers), Covaci (blacksmiths), Gabroveni (knife makers) and Cavafii Vechii (shoe-makers). The mix of nationalities and cultures is reflected in the mishmash of architectural styles, from baroque to neoclassical to art nouveau.

Today, after years of extensive renovations, the area has become home to many art galleries, antique shops and coffee houses, not too mention a myriad of trendy boutiques, restaurants and cool bars.

This is where the young, hip and new in town mingle on the charming cobblestone streets for hours on end.

Old Town Bucharest is ancient compared with most of the city, which was demolished during the Communist Era. The town center is comprised of squares and 19th century buildings reminiscent of Budapest or Plovdiv.

We enjoyed walking through this area numerous times. The number of shops and the different architectures keep you busy. Even at night this is a very lively place. The wild dogs were not a problem and seem to keep to themselves - just don't feed them.
