Bolivia Vacations

One of South America’s most diverse and democratic countries, Bolivia is sometimes referred to as the “Tibet of the Americas” for its remote geography. Rich in natural resources although poor in cash, Bolivia will blow away the traveller with spectacular, mysterious salt flats of Uyuni, jungles in the Amazonian basin and miles of grassland. ... Colonial cities like Potosi and Sucre tell the story of Bolivia’s years as part of the Spanish empire, which itself followed the dominion of the Incas over much of northern Bolivia. Today’s Bolivia is multiethnic and includes 34 official indigenous languages in addition to Spanish. You’ll never miss the beaches in this land-locked country, as the richness of the natural and cultural worlds are enough to keep the traveller busy for weeks.

With its landscape of jungles, mountains, lakes and the mysterious salt flats, plus the fascinating culture and history rooted in the Incas and other ancient peoples, Bolivia easily stands up to tough competition on the South American tourist route. As one of the safest countries in the region, it is especially ideal for solo travelers, and with affordable food, accommodation, and transportation, it also attracts those who like high adventure on a budget.

If you’re looking for adventure, then Bolivia has it all: mountains, lakes, jungle – and then some. From the endless Salt Plains of Uyuni, to the claustrophobic horror of Potosi’s silver mine, the ride of terror down the ‘Road of Death’ to swimming with piranhas and catching crocodiles in the Amazon basin. Where else in the world can you walk into a shop and buy a stick of dynamite like Wile E Coyote or be given a guided tour around a prison by one of the prisoners? Be warned: the concept of “Health and Safety” is one that Bolivia is reluctant to embrace.

Bolivia is definitely not on the beaten path, which in my opinion is great, because you can have it all to yourself. It has an amazing variety of climatic zones ranging from the stark altiplano with the spectacular Salar de Uyuni, to Lago Titicaca, to beautiful rain-forests and wetlands in the eastern lowlands. In addition to the wealth of natural beauty, Bolivia is also abundant in history and culture. Check out Pre-Incan ruins in Tiuanacu, Incan ruins in Samaipata, as well as see the influence of Spanish colonial rule in Sucre, Potosi, and the Jesuit missions in Santa Cruz province. Bolivia is not the easiest country to visit and travel in and lacks ideal tourism infrastructure, but if you are a bit adventurous you won't regret visiting Bolivia.

Bolivia was my first and so far only visit to South America, but what a trip!
The beautiful salt lake is like no other in the world. I could spend weeks there taking pictures. And the mountain biking expedition down the "World's Most Dangerous" road was insane and lived up to its name. Unfortunately I got my camera and wallet and passport photo, which is why I'm giving it only 4 stars, but I can't say it wasn't an adventure!

The heart of South America. From the Amazon basin to the peaks of La Paz, this place has power, grit and the adventure independent travelers are looking for. Just make sure to budget some extra travel time for the inevitable and unpredictable bloqueo. Great place to get lost.
