Description
Built in 1273, the tall Drum Tower in Beijing, China, served as the city's timekeeper for over 600 years. Beginning at 7 pm, drummers beat the 25 drums every two hours during the night. In 1924 ... Read more
officials changed to modern clocks, and the drum tower became a museum. The drums remained silent until New Year's Eve, 2001. Today you can hear a performance by drummers every hour. You can also climb to the top of the tower to view the city, but the steep, worn stairs may prove difficult for children and the elderly.

When I’m Old Beijing, climb up to this drum tower for the view. There are also free drumming demonstrations many times through out the day. There is also a small exhibition that shows how people used to run this place.

I prefer the Gulou area than other hutong neighbourhoods in Beijing. The Drum Tower is the start of this cute neighbourhood and it's a well-preserved building.

Once the center of time-keeping for the entire city, the Drum Tower now showcases traditional Chinese drum ceremonies every hour, on the hour. 26 giant drums, known as the Watchman's Drums, line the upper level of the tower. When they're all beat at once, the sound is magical. Cast your gaze to the south to look out over Jingshan Park and the Imperial Palace.

This was perfect as an activity the day after the Great Wall excursion. It's easy to find and provides a lively demo of the drumming technique. The sound is impressive and its fun to see the energy required to manage these large drums. I accidentally have photos of the bell tower in here that I can't delete. It's right there as well and you'll likely see both :)

I loved the Drum Tower and Bell Tower. Old buildings in a cool part of town. As you'd suspect, there are drums. Worth a visit.
