For more active visitors, Freiburg (the southernmost and sunniest of German cities) is a good jumping off point to explore the Black Forest, and the beautiful Danube and Rhine valleys offer plenty of choices of water sports, as well as wine! In the winter, Christmas markets are big throughout the state, and beer festivals take place in Stuttgart in spring and fall--with the fall Cannstatter Volksfest being the second biggest beer festival in the world after the Munich Oktoberfest.
