WestJet has announced their inaugural flights on their new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners starting April 2019. And three non-stop routes to London, Paris and Dublin from Calgary
Calgary is about to get a whole lot more tourism. WestJet, Canada’s second largest airline, has officially announced the launch of their new WestJet Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner fleet. The first three routes will connect Calgary, Alberta to European destinations London, Paris and Dublin.
What are Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners?
WestJet’s Dreamliners can carry 320 guests throughout the three-class cabin configuration. The Business cabin features 16 private pods with lie-flat seats, meaning the overseas journey just became a whole lot comfier. The pods are in a 1-2-1 configuration so everyone has access to the aisle. Of course, there will be a turn-down service.
The Premium cabin features 28 seats in a 2-3-2 configuration, and the Economy cabin will have a 3-3-3 seat configuration. Each seat will have its own touchscreen seat-back entertainment system, as well as power outlets and self-dimming windows. In Premium class, there will be a larger “social area” where people will have more room to walk and stretch.
As per WestJet, the Dreamliner is a “state-of-the-art” aircraft that can reach a range of 14,000 kilometres. It’s also 20 percent more fuel efficient than a Boeing 767 aircraft.
The first 10 WestJet Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners are set to arrive in Calgary in early 2019, with two more arriving before April. There is a possibility of adding another 10 aircrafts between 2020 and 2024.
The interiors of the WestJet Dreamliners have been influenced by the colours of Canada. This includes a “soothing alpine lake blue” in Economy class, “Aurora-inspired” colours in Premium class and earth tones in Business class that are inspired by the “splendour of Canadian summers.”

About WestJet
WestJet currently offers scheduled service to more than 100 destinations in North America, Central America, the Caribbean, and a few in Europe (mostly seasonal). It is currently known as Canada’s low-cost airline but they are moving into more upscale services with these new Dreamliners. WestJet still plans to remain an option as a low-cost airline.
However, their new offshoot company Swoop, launched in June 2018, aims to take over the low-cost airline market with their no-frills, lower fare offers.
WestJet is planning on expanding into the international market, although there are no current official announcement for new routes. There is speculation from a press release that they will branch off into the Asian and South American markets.
