Top Destinations for Canadians to Visit on a Thanksgiving Weekend Getaway

1. Halifax, Nova Scotia

A major stop in the Maritimes, the seaside city of Halifax has a fascinating history with lots to see and do throughout the year. The refurbished waterfront features a great boardwalk with lively restaurants, children’s playgrounds and boats offering tours of the picturesque harbour. Don’t forget to indulge in a world-famous Halifax Donair!

Some spots not to be missed in Halifax are of course Peggy’s Cove, the Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market, the Maritime Museum and the Halifax Citadel. For some outdoor exploring, check out Point Pleasant Park or the Halifax Public Gardens  The Halifax Public Gardens are the oldest public gardens in all of Canada and was built in 1836 by the Nova Scotia Horticultural Society. 2. Muskoka, Ontario

Get out to explore the heartland of southern Ontario and you’ll find yourself in breathtaking Muskoka. The lakes just a few hours north of Toronto are ideal spots for viewing fall colours around Thanksgiving, with open waters that reflect canopies of crimson red, burnt orange and deep yellow coloured leaves. Be sure to check out the Dorset Lookout Tower, which sits on a hill high above Lake of Bays, and take in all that Canadian fall foliage. If you’re up you have an extra day or so, try the free view at Lion’s Lookout in the fun and lively town of Huntsville and lace up some good walking shoes and go for a hike in the nearby Arrowhead Provincial Park.

Take things a little further this Thanksgiving and head to the town of Canmore. Just a short drive from Banff, you’ll be amazed by Rocky Mountain views that are just as spectacular here in Canmore. 5. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

6. Chicago

You’ll also find what might be the best craft beer scene in the U.S. The La Jolla Playhouse offers top-notch entertainment, and you can do some great hang-gliding trips off the chalky cliffs that line the coast.

The food scene in San Diego is growing stronger every year, and there are fantastic scenery and lovely driving trips to be found in the hills and mountains east of the city.
