Swoop Air is Canada’s newest ultra-low-fare airline. They’re all about sending travellers to their favourite cities in Canada and popular destinations throughout the U.S., Mexico, and the Caribbean on the cheap. Read on for all you need to know about this low-cost carrier, including Swoop Air destinations, baggage policies, and features.
Meet Swoop Air
Swoop Airlines launched its first flight on June 20, 2018 in Hamilton, Ontario, and is sending Canadian travellers to major cities across the country and to popular vacation destinations in the U.S., Mexico and the Caribbean, all at affordable prices.
What’s an Ultra-Low-Cost Airline?
Canada is new to the world of fringe airlines, also known as ULCC (ultra-low-cost carrier). But they are popping up all over the world in Asia, Latin America, Europe, and now Canada. The flight fee is basic: customers pay for the flight itself and can add-on what they wish. Swoop Air is the second low-cost carrier to begin operations in Canada after Flair Airlines, another ULCC, which currently sends travellers to 15 destinations throughout Canada at low-cost fares.
In August 2018, Swoop Air became Canada’s first ULCC to enter the U.S. market when the budget airline announced scheduled routes between Canadian cities and the U.S. The one-way base fares begin at C$99.
Who Owns Swoop?
Swoop Air is owned by the popular Canadian airline WestJet, which has been a low-cost alternative for Canadian travellers since it was founded in 1996. The headquarters is based in Calgary, and the major airport hub for Swoop is Hamilton Airport (YHM). The president of Swoop airlines is Steven Greenway.

Swoop Air Features: All You Need to Know
Travellers on Swoop Air can purchase WiFi on board in order to access Swoop’s inflight entertainment. Snacks and beverages are also available for purchase on the flight, as the base fares don’t come with any meal or snack package.
Can you select your seat with Swoop?
Swoop’s seat selection prices start at $10, and travellers should book online in order to snag the cheapest prices on seats! If you don’t select a seat, your seat will be provided for you upon check-in, which is common on many low-cost carriers.
Where do you check-in at the airport for Swoop?
There are Swoop counters at all of Swoop’s partner airports to check-in and drop off your bags. Passengers should always check in with Swoop Air and never through WestJet, as WestJet does not have the ability to check-in Swoop travellers. There is no cost to check-in at the airport or online with Swoop. If you are checking in at the airport, make sure to arrive early, as check-in closes 45 minutes before departure for domestic travel and 60 minutes for international travel. Always be sure to be at the Swoop Air counter more than an hour before departure if you are travelling internationally.
If you still need to purchase a seat, baggage allowance or any other extras we always recommend purchasing these online before arriving at the airport, as the price for these extras does go up at the airport.

Is Swoop cheaper than Air Canada or WestJet?
Swoop’s one-way base fares are some of the lowest on the market, but there are add-ons involved: baggage, meals, seat selection, etc. While Swoop Air have been adding routes since they began service less than a year ago, there is still less choice than with WestJet. However, if you are flexible with dates and are willing to fly to and from alternative airports, then Swoop provides an opportunity to find the cheapest tickets. If you live in Toronto and want to spend a weekend in Vegas, check for Swoop’s ongoing flight deals and book a flight from Hamilton to Las Vegas and fly out of the nearby Hamilton Airport.
Swoop Air Baggage Rules
The Swoop baggage fees are a little different than with other airlines as it’s a low-cost carrier, so make sure you read on and check Swoop’s baggage policies before your trip so you won’t be surprised by any extra fees upon check-in.
As with most airlines, it’s always cheaper to book your baggage and pay for it online instead of waiting until the last minute at the gate. Travellers can buy their bags online up to an hour prior to departure to save money. Carry-on bags and checked bags come with a fee, and Swoop allows one personal item free of charge. As per Swoop’s website, the personal item must fit under the seat in front of you on the aircraft, and measure a maximum of 41cmx15cmx33cm.
Swoop Air baggage discounts
All active members of the Canadian military are allowed two checked bags and one carry-on bag for free on Swoop flights. But, don’t register your bags beforehand! Head straight to a Swoop check-in counter on the day of your flight in order to get your military discount.
Hamilton Airport: A Cheaper Alternative for Low-Cost Carriers
One of the major airport hubs for Swoop Air is John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport (YHM) – only 80 kilometres from Canada’s largest international airport, Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ). Just a short drive from the U.S. border and in a major city in Ontario, Hamilton Airport proves to be much less of a hassle for travellers, compared to Pearson Airport. The overnight and weekly rates for parking are also cheaper at the airport in Hamilton compared to Pearson and other major cities.
