When does my passport need to be renewed?
Many countries require your passport to be valid for three to six months after you enter the country, so make sure to always check the expiration date before booking a flight. If it expires in December 2021, that can mean you need a new passport as of June 2021 or September 2021, depending on your destination.
This is especially true if you are planning to enter a country that requires a visa. You will have to renew your Canadian passport before applying for certain visas if your travel document expires in six months or less.
As a form of identification, your Canadian passport is valid until the expiry date, which means it needs to be valid upon your return to your originating country – hence the 3 or 6-month rule.
Please note that due to COVID-19, passport renewal time has been extended. If your Canadian passport expired on or after February 1, 2019, you now have extra time to renew your passport. You can apply to renew it any time within 2 years of its expiry date.
How often do I need to renew my Canadian passport?
When applying for a new passport or a Canadian passport renewal, adults are given the choice of 5 or 10 years. Kids only have a 5-year option; this goes for all Canadian children from newborns to age 16, according to the Government of Canada website. You can’t renew your child’s passport. You must get all the documents ready and apply for a new one.
Depending on your situation, your Canada passport renewal form will be a simplified form or you will need to apply for a new passport. If you have a 10-year passport, then you will have to renew your Canadian passport every 10 years.
Note that Canada does not add pages to your passport, which means that if you have collected your fair share of visa stamps and your passport is full, you’ll have to apply to renew your passport and pay the fees.
We recommend that the most intrepid of travellers apply for a 5-year passport in lieu of a 10-year passport, to avoid running out of pages in your passport. While the new Canadian passports do have 36 pages, you never know where life can take you.
Canadian passport cost
As of 2021, the cost of a standard five-year Canadian passport is $120 and a 10-year passport is $160. A child’s passport (0-15 years of age) is $57. Just remember that you’re stuck with your passport photo for 10 whole years if you opt for a 10-year Canadian passport!
There are additional fees associated with replacing a lost or stolen passport as well as for express or urgent processing. Urgent and express service is available only if you apply in person at a Canada passport office (with some exceptions).
Please note that passport fees are higher if you are located outside of Canada. Payments accepted include debit cards, credit cards, money orders, and certified cheques.

If you mail in your application, it should take 20 business days. This does not include mailing time.
Note that due to COVID-19 passport services in Canada have been reduced and processing time may take longer. Walk-in services at Service Canada Centres and passport offices are currently unavailable. What are the eligibility requirements to renew a Canadian passport?
It is easy to renew your passport with the adult simplified renewal passport application. In order to qualify, there are a few criteria you need to meet. Your passport must:
- not be damaged
- not have been reported lost or stolen
- have been issued with a 5-year or 10-year validity
- have been issued when you were at least 16 years of age
- have the same name, date of birth and place of birth you want on your new passport
- have the same gender identifier you want on your new passport (either printed on your current passport or the observation sticker)
- have expired on or after February 1, 2019
For the adult simplified passport renewal, you need to complete the simplified version of the Canadian passport application form, which can be downloaded via the Government of Canada’s website. Fill out the information online, print out the form, sign it, and bring it to your nearest passport location or mail it in with the necessary documents. You will also need your most recent passport, the processing fee, and two recent identical photos (more details on this below).
Please note that because walk-in services at passport offices are currently unavailable due to COVID-19, you will have to mail in your passport application.
What if I do not qualify for adult simplified renewal?
If you are not eligible for the simplified passport renewal, you need to fill out the general application form. In addition to the general Canadian passport form, you are required to provide your birth certificate or proof of citizenship and include your existing passport or related travel documents with the application.
The general adult form requires a signature from a guarantor. This is a friend or family member who will certify that you are being truthful on your application. A guarantor for your passport application must be a Canadian citizen who has known you for at least two years. If you do not have a guarantor, you need to obtain a Declaration in Lieu of Guarantor form from your local passport office (cannot be downloaded online).
Where to apply for a Canadian passport renewal

The Canadian passport office is strict about photo requirements. It’s always preferable to go to a shop that specializes in passport photos when renewing your passport.
You will need two identical photos for your passport application. Each passport photo must be taken by a commercial photographer or at a retail location, such as Shoppers Drug Mart (or Pharmaprix if you’re in Quebec), which offers passport photo services.
Passport photos should show your face and shoulders. Eyes must be open, and the expression must be neutral. The back of one of the photos must have the date it was taken as well as the contact info of the photographer or the commercial photographer or studio. The photos need to be recent, and taken within at least six months of submitting your application.
