Although Las Vegas was once considered “The Wedding Capital of the World”, most of the almost 43 million annual visitors to America’s “Sin City” have far more on their minds than visiting one of the iconic fast-serve wedding chapels. From glitzy shows and concerts to nature treks and sporting events, not to mention endless temptation at every turn, you’ll likely have to plan several follow-up trips just to wet your whistle.

Arriving in Las Vegas

Passengers flying into Las Vegas from Vancouver land at Las Vegas McCarran (LAS). Located in Paradise, 8 km south of Downtown Las Vegas, LAS handles the needs of over 47 million passengers annually (2 million of which are Canadians) via around thirty airline choices, including WestJet. The airport contains two terminals (T1 and T3) and four concourses are found in T1 for easy connection to ground transportation. Notable amenities include free WIFI, passenger lounges, clubs, play areas for the kids, art exhibitions, designated walking paths from .8 to 8.2 kilometers long, spas, and plenty of slot machines and gaming options.

Many local hotels offer free shuttle service to registered guests. But city buses, group shuttles, taxis, and limousines can also be found outside of both terminals. Taxis charge a USD$2 surcharge, however, on all airport fares, and not all accept credit cards. McCarran Rent-A-Car Center offers car rental services 4.8 km (3 mi) from the airport, and McCarran Rent-A-Car Center shuttle buses leave both terminals every five minutes.

Las Vegas Attractions

Las Vegas has a lot more to offer than just showgirls and casinos. Get a taste of Italy and ride a real Gondola at The Venetian Casino and Grand Canal. Head to the Bellagio's fountains for a waterwork show you’ll never forget. Follow the faux Manhattan skyline and take a ride on the Big Apple Rollercoaster. Get a bird’s-eye view of the Strip on the 550-feet tall High Roller Observation Wheel, see a glitzy show like Cirque du Soleil or enjoy a concert by any number of amazing musical acts.

If you’re looking for non-glitzy fun, check out the Mob Museum to see who lived and ruled Vegas in the early days. Take the family out for some high-flying ziplining. Head about 30 miles (48 km) south of Vegas to tour Hoover Dam. Or split that travel time in half and visit Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area to reconnect with nature away from the sensory overload of the hotel region.
