Flying out of Miami International Airport

Miami's primary airport is Miami International Airport (MIA), located about 13 km from downtown Miami. The airport is served by over fifty airlines flying worldwide. Currently, two airlines offer direct flight routes from Miami to Montreal: Air Canada Rouge and American Airlines. Air Canada departs from Terminal J and American Airlines uses Terminals D and E. At all three terminals, you'll find ATMs, currency exchange locations, snack kiosks and restaurants, and a variety of shopping options.

By car, a ride from downtown Miami to Miami International will take about twenty minutes. Parking is available at a rate of about $22 CAD per day. If you're flying via Air Canada, you'll want to park at the Flamingo Garage as it is closest to Terminal J. The Dolphin Garage is the best choice for American Airlines flights. Plan to arrive at the airport at least three hours prior to flight departure with a valid passport in hand.

Montreal Airport Options

Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL) is one of Canada's busiest airports. As Montreal's other international airport is solely used for cargo, YUL is currently the only option for air travel into the city. The airport is located about 20 km from downtown Montreal.

Trudeau Airport consists of one passenger terminal with four floors. Arrivals are on the ground floor, where there is a separate section for domestic, U.S., and international arrivals. Baggage claim and ground transportation links can also be found on the ground floor. You'll find taxis waiting just outside of the terminal. They offer a fixed rate of $40 CAD for rides from the airport to downtown Montreal. Rides to all other spots in the city are subject to a $17 CAD minimum fare.

Other ground transportation options include Uber, public transportation busses, and rental cars. Uber drivers are permitted to pick up passengers at Door 6 on the departures level. Busses also pick up directly at the airport and are the most budget-friendly transportation option. If you'll be travelling throughout the city, you can get an all-day bus pass for just $10 CAD. From the airport to downtown Montreal, the bus ride will be about an hour. Busses run 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Car rental is the best option for those spending a lot of time in the city. Companies like Budget and Enterprise all have service counters directly at the airport. You can book at the airport or book free in advance with Skyscanner to ensure availability.

What to Expect in Montreal

Though flights from Miami to Montreal generally take about four hours, both cities are in the same time zone so you won't experience any jet lag. The weather in the two cities, however, is quite different, especially in the winter. In Miami, temperatures rarely drop below 4° C. In Montreal, below-freezing temperatures are typical between November and March. Snow, ice, and high winds are all typical during the Montreal winter season. For this reason, most tourists choose to visit the city between late March and May or between September and early November. During the spring and fall seasons, the weather is usually mild and pleasant.

If you rent a car, stay alert when driving within the city as many streets are one-way only. You also cannot turn right on a red light in some areas. Additionally, it is a good idea to brush up on your language skills as most of the traffic signs in the city will be in French.
