Flying out of Frankfurt
The German town of Frankfurt, fifth-largest city in Germany, is serviced by multiple airports. However, only one flies direct to Canada - Frankfurt Airport (FRA). This airport is a major hub for German airline Lufthansa, an airline which offers flights to Vancouver year-round. Air Canada and Condor also offer seasonal flights to Vancouver. Though direct flights are possible, most flight options include at least one stop in places like Toronto, London and Munich.
Frankfurt Airport is the busiest airport in Germany and 12th busiest in the world, so leave yourself a lot of extra time to navigate the airport. Generally for international flights you will want to arrive at the airport at least two hours early. You'll need your airline ticket and valid passport to travel to Vancouver.
Another option for transport is Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN), located 120km from Frankfurt. The airport is serviced by two passenger airlines: Ryanair and Wizz Air. While it may be possible to fly from HHN to Vancouver, you will have at least two layovers. Since this airport offers fewer flight options and more stops, it is recommended to fly from Frankfurt to Vancouver through FRA instead.
Vancouver Airport Options
The primary airport servicing Vancouver is Vancouver International Airport (YVR), located about 30 minutes from downtown Vancouver. YVR is the busiest airport in Western Canada and second-busiest in the country.
Taxis at YVR are subject to flat rates to different zones in Vancouver, ranging from $20 to $39 (plus gratuity). You can also catch a rapid transit train right at your terminal, which will take you to downtown Vancouver in around 30 minutes.
Located 65 kilometers from downtown Vancouver, Abbotsford International Airport (YXX) is also an option for flying into the city. Despite the name, this airport offers almost exclusively domestic flights, with only one seasonal international destination. If you're flying from Frankfurt to YXX, you'll have to stop in another major Canadian city, like Toronto or Calgary.
