Only with an hour to spend here, but we sure made the most of time and Chester is absolutely lovely! With its unique architecture and rows (a higher outside level on the high street), it really is a pleasure to walk around the city. Thrown in with this is the history, where there is a castle and castle walls to walk around, with a river close by and Roman sites dotted around. Definitely worth the visit.

Chester is a walled Roman-built city with a lot of history. The city is said to be haunted, and there is an ancient heating system underneath the streets that can be explored at certain stores around town (like Jigsaw). There are plenty of pubs, historic landmarks, great places to eat, and fun activities.

Chester is located on the River Dee and very close the border with Wales. I've stayed within this walled city several times while on business over the years. Chester was founded as a "castrum" or Roman fort. Chester's four main roads, Eastgate, Northgate, Watergate and Bridge, follow routes laid out at this time – almost 2,000 years ago. Chester was also one of the last towns in England to fall to the Normans in the Norman conquest of England. Chester has a number of medieval buildings, but some of the black-and-white buildings within the city centre are actually Victorian restorations. Chester is one of the best preserved walled cities in the British Isles, and I've walked the entire perimeter several times. There's also a cool horse track at one end of which I'd love to attend some day.

Chester is a city but of the sleepy variety. No glitzy lights and hardcore clubbing scene here, although due to it having a college and law school, there are plenty of studenty haunts and a few good night spots. Chester's interesting historically - originally a Roman settlement, it retains some of the legacy of this with old city walls, cobbled streets and charming architecture. It's a good provincial place to visit - good shopping, a racecourse, and some lovely walks along the banks of the River Dee. It's a good place to come if you fancy a weekend break that is quite chilled out. Good for kids too - the Chester Zoo is internationally known, and the nearby Ice Cream Farm (you need a car to get there from Chester) is good fun too.
