Welcome to Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai, on the northern end of Thailand bordering Myanmar and Laos, is in a mountainous region famed for its national parks. The food is spicy, the wildlife abundant and recreational opportunities abound. If you're ready to explore this metropolis that treasures its natural heritage, Skyscanner can help. The innovative search engine can find the perfect hotel at the best rate, as well as cheap airfare and that rental car. This is one locale you don't want to miss.

Things to Do in Chiang Rai

Temples abound in this ancient land. Wat Phra Kaeo, or Temple of the Emerald Buddha is considered one of the oldest. The intricate Thai architecture with its multiple spires is awash in gold leaf and red décor. Though the Buddha is now in Bangkok, several other deities are housed in this revered place. Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple, is the newest. Construction began in 1998 and it's expected to take decades to complete. The intricately carved gate and the mirror and mural covered ordination hall are just a hint of what's to come.

Chiang Rai city is just over an hour from Doi Luang National Park. Your best bet is to take one of the tours available, which can usually be arranged by your hotel. The 1,170 square kilometre nature area is home to waterfalls, several native bird species and mammals including the civet, Malayan flying lemur, bears and tigers. Roadways rim the park, leading you to plenty of eye-popping photo ops.

Shopping takes on a whole new meaning. Check out the Chiang Rai Night Bazaar, a local street market offering spicy Thai foods and handmade goods. The Central Plaza Chiangrai is a more typical shopping mall, including a movie theatre on the top floor. Other places to find local artwork include Doi Din Dang Pottery, the Fah Thai Market and Chezmoi Handicraft.

Getting To and Around Chiang Rai

The Mae-Fah Luang- Chiang Rai International Airport (CEI) is a mere eight kilometres from downtown. If you need a car, there are several companies with rental desks just outside baggage claim. You'll be driving on the left, just like in Britain. Manual transmission cars are the norm; if you need an automatic be sure and book your car well in advance. Pre-paid taxis are available, charging roughly $8.00 CAD for the ride into town. Metered taxis are also waiting for customers. Be sure you negotiate the rate before you leave. Accepted currency is the Thai Baht.
