Hotels in Malta

Malta may be one of Europe's smallest countries, but it packs within it an astonishing amount of history and natural splendour. Its location in the middle of the Meditteranean has made it a prized jewel for dozens of the region's great empires, from the Ancient Greeks to the British Empire (with Romans, Ottomans, Crusaders, and Napoleon in between). That contentious history has left a legacy of stunningly eclectic architecture, world-class art, and a unique and fiercely proud national identity. Combined with a mountainous terrain, deep blue lagoons, and picture-perfect beaches and you have an unmatched travel destination.

When looking for hotels in Malta, Skyscanner can help you find a great place to stay. As one of Europe's top tourist destinations, you are spoiled for choice when it comes to finding a place to stay in this beautiful Mediterranean country.

Where Can I Find Hotels?

Most hotels in Malta can be found in Valetta, the historic capital city whose centre has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as the nearby cities of Cottonera, Sliema, and St. Julian's. In Valetta you can find everything from budget hostels to luxury 5-star hotels.

Bugibba, along with the entire St. Paul's Bay region, is also one of the main tourist hotspots on the island of Malta and with so many hotels here it is easy to find a great deal. While Bugibba itself doesn't offer much in the way of attractions, it is close to some of Malta's best beaches on the northern coast.

The island of Gozo is more isolated than the main island of Malta, which is exactly its charm. If you're looking for a more laidback holiday, you can find everything from family-run hotels to luxury resorts on this scenic island. Marsalforn and Xlendi are the two most built-up areas of Gozo in terms of tourism infrastructure, although you can find plenty of great hotels (often at better prices than on the Island of Malta itself) throughout Gozo. Gozo is also a great place to stay if you are looking for a night in a converted farmhouse or in an eco-certified accommodation.

What Hotels in Malta Offer

Malta is a major tourist destination, meaning that there is a huge variety of hotels and accommodation types and the level of service varies accordingly. If you are looking for something more affordable but basic there are hostels and campsites available. Keep in mind that some hostels only serve a younger demographic. Holiday villas and apartment-hotels are also available if you still want to feel like you're living at home without sacrificing luxury. In terms of hotels, Malta has everything from 2-star hotels offering a comfortable place to sleep to luxurious 5-star resorts featuring pools, spas, sweeping ocean views, and high-end dining.

Getting to Your Hotel

Many hotels offer transfers from the airport. However, if they don't there are other ways of getting to your hotel and around Malta itself. The white taxis outside of the airport are the most convenient option, but are also extremely expensive. Be warned that most white cab drivers will not use the meter. Black cab companies are cheaper and often provide a better level of service, but you will need to book them in advance.

There is a decent public bus system which offers reliable transport between the main sites, although it can be a little less reliable if your hotel is a bit out of the way. Malta is also a great country to rent a car in, especially since many of the best attractions, including secluded beaches and megalithic temples, are located outside of the main cities.
