Kanazawa is a larger city with a castle, a bustling downtown area and historic neighborhoods that transport you back in time. A fish market provides the opportunity to try fresh seafood. It's all fairly accessible by foot, but public transit works well too.

Fantastic city with a little bit of everything. I went during the cherry blossom season and it was magical. The gardens were illuminated at night and many attractions were open later or for free to celebrate the season. Street food stalls were also open to add a more festive feel. The seafood is incredibly fresh and it's an easy city to walk around. I often didn't take the convenient buses as I would rather walk the 30 minutes through the city. Great atmosphere and a great hub for day trips into the area.

Kanazawa is microcosm of Japan. The Best of Japan; history, culture, foods, shopping, etc. is represented here. For example if you are young professionals looking for a trendy clothes, go to Daiwa shopping district in Korimbo: No need to go all over Tokyo.

On the Sea of Japan and bordered by the Japanese Alps, Kanazawa was spared during World War ll, so much of its heritage is preserved. Major sights are Kenrokeun Gardens, Kanazawa Castle (the site of ongoing renovation), Higashi Geisha District, Oyama-jinja Shrine, Nagamachi Samurai District and Myoryuji Temple. If you have time to visit only one sight, it should be Kenrokeun Gardens.
